Press release: Mobile Marketing Consumer Response is Heavily Influenced by Incentives, According to Survey

Digital Media Research Service | Mobile Content Research Service | Mobile Marketing and Advertising

While most consumers’ initial reactions to marketing and advertising messages on their mobile phone can often be negative, a recent survey from ABI Research finds that their level of responsiveness can often be improved through incentives. In fact, approximately 37% of those who have received text message-based advertising have indicated they are more likely to respond to advertising in a text-based marketing message if they are offered an incentive such as a retail coupon or free song or ringtone, compared with only 11% who indicated that such incentives would not have any impact.

“We think that in general, advertisers and operators must tread carefully when delivering marketing messages to a consumer’s mobile handset, especially given that many subscribers believe they are paying a significant amount of money for their mobile services,” says research director Michael Wolf. “However, we believe that marketing and advertising messaging that is properly crafted and that utilizes incentives could enjoy more acceptance on the part of the consumer.”

Incentives that received the most positive response in an ABI Research study were real-world discounts and coupons for retail storefronts. In fact, over 60% of those who were either neutral or open to potential text message marketing nominated a discount coupon at a local retailer as the incentive they would most likely respond to. The next most popular incentives were free ringtones and songs.

“As more content and applications move through both messaging systems and browsers, advertisers are going to need to consider how best to package advertising,” said Wolf. “We believe that most consumers will ultimately be amenable to limited marketing on their mobile phones, particularly that which is non-intrusive, targeted, and that can bring them some kind of value in the form of both real-world and digital media-based incentives.”

ABI Research’s recent study Mobile Marketing and Advertising presents in-depth analysis of the major areas of mobile marketing, including mobile messaging-based marketing, mobile web (including both text and banner), mobile search, mobile game advertising, and mobile video advertising.

It is part of two ABI Research Services: Digital Media and Mobile Content.

Tri-Global Technologies LLC will introduce its new Tri-Global Mobile Utility Suite at the Partner Software Users Conference being held September 8-12 in Athens, Ga. The Tri-Global Mobile Utility Suite integrates the company’s popular UtiliMapper, BarcodeMapper and MobileStaker products into a single software package for use by mobile field personnel.

“The Mobile Utility Suite facilitates the sharing of field data among the three applications and makes it easier for our clients to use all three software solutions from a single installation,” said Mike Bellrose, Tri-Global’s Chief Operating Officer. “The integrated suite opens our solutions to a wider range of mobile mapping users in the electric utility, pipeline, oil and gas, municipal, and defense industries.”

Tri-Global Technologies develops innovative mobile mapping solutions by integrating advanced GPS and GIS technologies designed to enhance the efficiency of field personnel in the cable, electric, gas, water, telecommunications, public works, and pipeline industries. Tri-Global will be demonstrating the new product suite at the Partner Software User Conference.

The Tri-Global Mobile Utility Suite supports the entire Trimble® Mapping and GIS line, including the brand new “4 inch accurate” 2008 GeoXH™ and cellular modem capable Nomad™ 800X series and incorporates the following software applications, which are also offered as stand-alone products:

• Tri-Global UtiliMapper software establishes direct communication between Trimble GPS-based mobile GIS field data collectors and Radiodetection Ltd. underground locator devices. UtiliMapper enables users to easily collect underground utility location and attribute data for mapping, maintenance and integrity modeling. This solution is now being deployed extensively in the electric utility, oil & gas, and telecommunications industries.

• Tri-Global MobileStaker is a mobile field application for use by electric utility crews designing new service drops or power line installations. Embraced by electrical cooperatives and designed to work with the Partner Software suite, MobileStaker runs on most Trimble mobile GIS devices with integrated GPS mapping capabilities. During power line staking operations, the utility field crew uses MobileStaker to collect the locations of poles, lights, and other equipment that will be installed. The application provides highly accurate, real-time calculations of distance, bearing, and deflection measurements from any selected asset location.

• Tri-Global BarcodeMapper integrates wireless barcode scanning and GPS-based mobile GIS technologies into a single solution that dramatically improves the efficiency of asset inventory projects for municipalities, utilities, and pipeline operators. BarcodeMapper allows users to quickly collect sub-meter location data and attribute descriptions for any indoor or outdoor assets that can be affixed with standard barcode labels.

In developing the Mobile Utility Suite, Tri-Global Technologies has added several new features that enhance the overall performance and utility of the applications. One new addition is the Inspection Module, which runs either as a stand-alone tool or add-on to MobileStaker. Inspection Module allows users to collect menu-drive inspection items and their location data either with barcode or GPS information. Developed for inside or outside inspections, the module also integrates with the Trimble Nomad to capture digital photos.

Another new capability, called the Navigator Module, allows users of Trimble mobile GIS devices to run TomTom® NAVIGATOR applications. Tri-Global designed this module to assist field personnel in finding assets more quickly. By locating an asset on their Tri-Global software screen, a field crew can then have their devices provide voice directions to navigate them to the asset location.

“Mobile field personnel are becoming more versatile regardless of the industry they work in, and as a result, they need a broader range of mobile applications at their fingertips,” said Bellrose. “The Tri-Global Mobile Utility Suite allows nearly any mobile field worker to do their jobs more quickly and accurately.”

Press release: Online Social Networking Goes Mobile: 140 Million Users by 2013

Mobile Content Research Service | Mobile Social Networking

www.abiresearch.com

Online social networking is huge and growing strongly, but what happens when all those virtual friends hit the road? Increasingly, they will be able to keep in touch via mobile versions of their favorite social networks, running on their cellular phones. ABI Research forecasts that in 2013, more than 140 million subscribers will share “anytime, anywhere” experiences this way, and they will generate subscription revenues in excess of $410 million.

“Subscriber numbers for mobile social networking will climb at a relatively modest rate for the next three or four years, but will then start to accelerate sharply,” says research director Michael Wolf. “That uptick is based on assumed acceptance levels in the giant emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Those countries are wildcards, very difficult to estimate, so we are quite conservative in our forecasts.”

Some mobile versions of social networks will follow the same model common to today’s Internet-based groups such as MySpace and Facebook: free browser-based access. Such models pose a problem for mobile operators by limiting their slice of the revenue to a charge for data traffic. “The ideal scenario for the mobile operator includes a recurring revenue stream: a subscriber paying $1.99 or $2.99 a month to have this application on their handset,” says Wolf.

Beyond the relatively modest subscription revenues that mobile social networking will generate, there will also be significant opportunities in mobile advertising as well as in mobile content sales. A recent end-user survey conducted by ABI Research showed that mobile users of social networks are likely to consume two or three times as much digital mobile content (pictures, music, videos and games) than their “asocial” peers. That would suggest a golden marketing and advertising opportunity yet, says Wolf, that isn’t happening: “They are not offering the right kinds of products for these users. The advertising isn’t that sophisticated yet.” His conclusion? “Social networking applications have to be uniquely mobile and not reliant entirely on advertising-based revenues, at least not initially.”

ABI Research’s “Mobile Social Networking” study demystifies some of the key issues around mobile social networking: http://www.abiresearch.com/products/market_research/mobile_social_networking

Press release: Blue Sky Network Ensures Real-Time Tracking in Support of First Angola Election in 16 Years

GPS Tracking Solutions Onboard VIH Helicopters Contracted for African Country's National Election

Blue Sky Network, a leading global provider of mobile asset management and fleet management solutions using GPS tracking, today announced it will work with its customer, VIH Helicopters Ltd., to provide flight tracking for the distribution of voter materials for this year's presidential election in Angola. This is the first national election since 1992 for the southwestern African country, and the Angolan government has contracted Canada-based VIH, which has equipped their entire fleet with Blue Sky network tracking, to assist with transportation and logistics before and after the election.

VIH Helicopters, which has Blue Sky Network D1000C and ACH1000 kits installed on its entire aircraft fleet, will provide two Sikorsky S-92s, two Sikorsky S-61s, a Bell 212 and a Eurocopter EC135. The helicopters will be used to help set up polling booths before the election, fly international observers throughout the country, and fly to remote communities and offshore oil rigs as mobile polling stations. After the election the contracted helicopters will also serve as a temporary national transit service since many roads in the region are impassable.

"Blue Sky Network equipment in each aircraft is essential to our flight watch plan for this project. There is very little air traffic control in Angola and the VHF radio coverage is extremely patchy," said Corey Taylor, operations manager for VIH. "Local operators in Angola use high frequency radio but that is not reliable across the country, and we wouldn't feel comfortable having six aircraft in the Angolan outback without knowing where they are at all times."

Blue Sky Network's D1000C is a reliable and economic solution for near real-time fleet tracking with a built in GPS position reporting, an Iridium transceiver and telemetry data link. Combined with the ACH1000 control head, it also provides VIH helicopters with voice connectivity. This secure and easily installed equipment brings reliable fleet reporting and remote tracking capabilities to all the VIH helicopters, regardless of location.

Both kits combine with SkyRouter, Blue Sky Network's web-based tracking software. SkyRouter easily integrates with Google Earth for asset tracking, and interactive updates on all mobile assets. The onboard unit transmits reports from the remote assets directly to the site for review by operations or dispatch, providing a real-time view of asset locations.

"We are pleased to supply our valued, long time customer VIH and the Angolan government with our technology for this historic event," said Jon Gilbert, president and CEO of Blue Sky Network. "This is a great example of how Blue Sky Network tracking and GPS solutions provide essential communication tools for organizations working in developing countries around the world."

Press release: Polaris Wireless Launches Industry's Most Advanced Hybrid Location Solution

Built for Next Generation Handsets and Network Architectures Globally, Solution Delivers Consistent High Accuracy Across All Environments

Polaris Wireless, the global leader in high accuracy, software-based location systems, have announced a new solution within its Wireless Location Signatures (Polaris WLS(TM)) family of products.

The Polaris Wireless Advanced Hybrid Solution is designed to work in conjunction with A-GPS systems to consistently provide the highest possible accuracy across all environments, especially dense urban and indoor environments, where standalone A-GPS mobile location solutions experience severe accuracy, yield and latency challenges.

Polaris's patented Advanced Hybrid Solution can now locate callers in urban environments with accuracy improvements ranging from 40 to 70 percent, at the 67th and 95th percentiles respectively, as compared to standalone A-GPS. This increased accuracy represents a significant improvement for the industry and is unmatched by other less advanced hybrid solutions.

High-value applications such as navigation, work force management, child/family finder and social networking require consistent high accuracy across all environments, including indoor and dense urban, in order to provide a high quality user experience.

These location-based-services (LBS) represent a lucrative revenue stream for wireless carriers globally. Only the Polaris Wireless Advanced Hybrid Solution delivers this level of accuracy consistency across all environments by uniquely incorporating all available satellite and wireless information into its Wireless Location Signatures system.

Polaris Wireless has developed unique algorithms, based on extensive testing in challenging environments that effectively combine information from WLS and A-GPS to provide the highest and most consistent accuracy. These algorithms dramatically enhance performance in comparison to simple fallback approaches that select another location technology when A-GPS fails to get a location fix.

Polaris Wireless' Advanced Hybrid Solution also improves time-to-fix to support location applications that require immediate accuracy location information; that is, within 3-4 seconds, rather than over 20 seconds with a stand-alone A-GPS solution.

"There is a strong need for location solutions that close the accuracy gap for indoor and urban calls where well over 60% of all wireless usage takes place," commented Brent Iadarola from Frost and Sullivan. "No single location technology alone meets the location accuracy needs of LBS applications across all calling environments, making hybrid solutions necessary to fulfill the promise of next generation location services."

The Polaris Wireless Advanced Hybrid Solution is available as a commercial, Tier 1 carrier grade, LBS-ready platform supported on fully redundant and scalable off-the-shelf server hardware. Together, these specifications leverage Polaris Wireless' proven software-based location technology to support pervasive LBS with mass-market location capabilities now and in the future.

The Polaris Advanced Hybrid Solution is built to work with all legacy handsets, as well as the next generation of feature rich smart phones as they become available in the market. The Polaris Hybrid Solution works for existing 2G and 3G networks and can be easily transitioned to work with the next generation of networks such as 4G/LTE and WiMax.

"Building on Polaris Wireless' commercially proven and unique capability to accurately locate all calls anywhere in the wireless network, our new Advanced Hybrid Solution offers something that no other location technology, such as GPS/A-GPS and UTDOA, can do," said Dr. Marty Feuerstein, CTO of Polaris Wireless. "Because the Polaris WLS(TM) technology provides a powerful system that processes a variety of network information, wireless carriers can now benefit from a solution that improves as wireless devices become more powerful and evolves across all air-interfaces."

The Power of Signatures

The Polaris Wireless Advanced Hybrid Solution taps the power of handset signature technology to deliver the industry's highest level of accuracy. Like a fingerprint's pattern of lines and swirls, a location can be identified by a unique set of values including measurements of neighboring cell signal strengths, time delay and other network parameters.

Polaris Wireless leverages existing wireless location technologies to mine network measurement information and determine accurate locations to within tens of meters.

About Polaris Wireless

Polaris Wireless is committed to simplifying and improving the process of location of mobile phones for carriers around the globe by serving as the price/performance leader delivering accurate, reliable and flexible products to support a variety of applications.

Since 2003 Polaris has been successfully deploying the only software-based location system that meets FCC E911 Phase II requirements. Polaris is backed by venture capital funds Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Draper Richards and Centre Palisades Ventures. Our goal is to improve safety, reduce crashes and improve the flow of traffic moving through the heavily congested corridor. To accomplish our public safety mission, we are seeking the best possible technology to implement the system."

Just a 40-minute trip from New York City, Woodbridge has been a meeting place for people since 1664. It is the oldest incorporated community in New Jersey, and the fifth largest municipality in the state with a population of more than 106,000. The Township consists of 10 communities -- Avenel, Colonia, Fords, Hopelawn, Iselin, Keasbey, Menlo Park Terrace, Port Reading, Sewaren, and Woodbridge proper.

ATS serves more than 120 communities across the country with photo-enforcement programs in New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

New York City's red-light camera program has seen a 73 percent reduction in violations between 1994 and 2005. According to a 2007 study completed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, researchers tallied signal violations at intersections in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before and after red-light camera enforcement had been in effect for about one year and found the cameras reduced violations by 96 percent.

Press release: Location Based Technologies Commences PocketFinder Pilot Production

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Location Based Technologies (OTCBB:LBAS), a leading-edge family service provider of personal locator devices and services, today announced it has commenced pilot production of the PocketFinder® personal locator at the Jabil Circuit (NYSE:JBL) manufacturing facility in Meung-Sur-Loire, France, thereby setting the stage for mass production runs scheduled for the fourth quarter.

With previously announced GSM-type laboratory approval allowing connectivity on European and other GSM wireless networks, early sales commenced immediately. As a result the company is conducting inter-operability testing with a major distributor of European wireless products. Additional pilot run devices will be used for pre-sale testing and evaluation to generate purchase orders.

There is also positive news for the U.S. market. “Due to the unprecedented small size of the PocketFinder and PetFinder® devices, U.S. certification referred to as PTCRB has been a challenge using existing technology,” explained David Morse, co-president and CEO of Location Based Technologies. “By partnering with a leading antenna company that incorporates a revolutionary technology based on magnetic fields rather than ground planes, we have been able to break through the barrier and can now proceed to the final steps of certification.”

“We are committed to delivering a robust and dependable high quality product,” Morse added. “Although the final development of the PocketFinder® personal locators took longer than expected, it was necessary to slow down the process and ensure that the software was properly de-bugged and performing up to our customer's expectations. We will continue to enhance the functioning capability of our products on an ongoing basis and have built in the ability to continuously upgrade the device through either an internet connection or via "over-the-air" updating capability.

The PocketFinder family of products uses advanced technology to help families stay connected. The smallest known single-board GSM/GPS device easily fits into a pocket, purse or backpack, and can be accessed via the Internet, cell phone or landline to show its real time location. In addition, the devices include several advanced features, including designating customizable alert areas as electronic “zones” to notify the user when a family member or pet leaves or enters a specified area. The devices can even track vehicle speeds to ensure family members are driving safely.

About Location Based Technologies

Press release: Eventful’s Technology Platform and Content Gives Mobile Application Developers a Competitive Edge

Eventful, the leading service for discovering, sharing, creating and promoting local events, today announced partnerships with three leading mobile application providers that are developing location-based service offerings leveraging Eventful's microtargeted event data. Earthcomber, Loopt and uLocate are enhancing their existing suites of mobile applications by incorporating Eventful’s data into their software to enable users to discover local event listings automatically tailored to users’ current location.

Coming two weeks after Sprint announced it would feature Eventful's location-based listings on its XOHMTM WiMAX mobile broadband service, this latest announcement solidifies Eventful's position as the leading provider of local events information to consumers, Web sites, publishers and mobile application providers.

“Effortlessly finding events of interest near you is key to what we call ‘Geobrowsing,’” said Rick Robinson, VP of Services for XOHM. “Eventful is helping us build a novel platform on which this will come to life. We actually see location as the ‘new presence,’ the confluence of context, relevance and location will bear this out on XOHM.”

Eventful provides its user community with multi-channel access to the world's largest selection of local events through its Web site (Eventful.com), email programs, an iPhone application and social-networking applications.

In addition, Eventful has a fast-growing business syndicating its technology platform and event content to wireless and online service providers. Over 1,200 API developers and content providers leverage Eventful’s data and platform, including the Los Angeles Times, local news community Topix and Ripple TV, which displays advertising and local news in more than 1,500 locations across the United States.

Eventful's partnerships with wireless location-based service providers put it on the leading edge of a fast-growing trend. A recent Gartner report1 predicts that location awareness will become a mainstream feature of mobile applications within two to five years and that the market will grow from 16 million users in 2007 to 43.2 million in 2008 and 300 million by 2011. It estimates that revenues from location services will grow from $485.1 million in 2007 to more than $8 billion in 2011.

"GPS integration transforms the mobile phone into a powerful tool for finding out about the world around you, creating a demand for location-based content that Eventful is uniquely positioned to fulfill," said Jordan Glazier, CEO, Eventful. "Eventful’s powerful syndication platform and its selection of millions of local events worldwide make it a natural partner for companies that want to give their users access to information that reflects both their interests and their location at any given moment.”

Earthcomber
Earthcomber is a “personal radar” application for mobile users. It employs patented search technology to constantly scan the user’s surroundings and serve up information about people, places and things nearby that match the user’s preferences. Earthcomber uses Eventful as a core component to deliver a constant stream of event-based content to its users.

Loopt
Loopt is an interoperable social-mapping service that is available across multiple carrier networks and is supported on over 80 mobile devices. Loopt uses location-based technology to connect users with the world around them, allowing them to find each other on the go and instantly share photos and comments with friends and communities like Facebook® and Twitter.

Loopt also makes it easy to discover and explore nearby places and events recommended by friends and popular local services such as Yelp® and, later this year, Eventful.

“Loopt already helps users connect with their friends. Now, through this partnership with Eventful, Loopt users will have the power to discover things to do that are happening around them,” said Evan Tana, director of product management and marketing of Loopt. “Incorporation of Eventful information along with other leading local content like Yelp makes Loopt a one-stop shop to find your friends, get recommendations, and discover new things to do.”

Sprint
Sprint’s XOHM WiMAX high-speed mobile data network, which will debut commercially in Baltimore this September, will feature unique location and personalization capabilities to customize information for the user at home, at work or places in between.

At launch, an XOHM portal will offer location-based content from leading brands including Eventful, which will provide users with local event listings displayed in a map view. Customers will be able to select sub-categories of interest, search for events and click through to Eventful.com to get more event information and purchase tickets.

WHERE
WHERE, a service of uLocate Communications, connects consumers with people, places and things through the power of location. Whether finding friends in a crowded city, locating the lowest gas prices, satisfying a craving for a latte or scoring tickets to a local show, the award-winning location-based application gives users access to the world’s most comprehensive set of location-based widgets.

Each of WHERE’s widgets delivers content based on the user’s current location and provides the ability to show this content on a map, and get directions all while exploring and sharing interests with friends. Whatever your pursuits, WHERE delivers the best in local information. For more information go to www.where.com/eventful.

“Eventful has been available on our platform for over a year, it’s a great compliment to the over 70 innovative widgets we have in WHERE,” said Dan Gilmartin, vice president of marketing, uLocate Communications. “The WHERE Eventful widget empowers users to quickly and easily find nearby happenings, including concerts, sporting events and more from their mobile device, and then easily connect with their friends through Buddy Beacon.”

Press release: Leading Australian Mapping Provider Selects Garmin(R) for Mobile Phone Navigation

OLATHE,KS--Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN - News), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today an agreement with Australian company Sensis whereby Garmin will be the turn-by-turn navigation provider for selected Telstra GPS-enabled mobile phones. Sensis, Australia’s leading information resource, and a wholly owned Telstra subsidiary, will provide the point of interest information and other dynamic content for the navigation application, “Whereis® Navigator.”

Whereis® Navigator is based on Garmin Mobile®, Garmin’s intuitive mobile phone application that gives turn-by-turn, voice-prompted navigation directly on the phone.

“Sensis, like Garmin, is an innovative company that strives to improve the everyday life of their customers,” said Charles Morse, Garmin’s director of mobile and online marketing. “By offering Garmin’s premium navigation to Telstra customers, Whereis Navigator users will save time and headaches as they’ll now be able to avoid hassles related to bad directions or getting lost.”

Gregan McMahon, group manager of Sensis Mobile, comments that the partnership with Garmin is an exciting step towards providing Telstra customers with an even better mapping experience on their mobile device. “Combining Garmin’s leading satellite navigation with Sensis’ comprehensive mapping points of interest and other content takes Whereis Navigator to the next level,” says McMahon.

The Whereis Navigator interface is very intuitive and allows customers to easily route to a specific street address or to one of the 600,000 points of interest (POI) – places like hotels, restaurants, shopping and tourist attractions. POI search results can be viewed on a high resolution map, providing a quick overview of POI locations relative to the user’s current position.

The text-to-speech functionality allows the device to audibly announce the name of streets and POIs, letting drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. If users stray off course, Whereis Navigator will automatically calculate the quickest way to get back on track.

In addition to turn-by-turn directions, Whereis Navigator offers fixed speed and red-light camera warnings while driving. Whereis Navigator also features seamless integration with the user’s contacts stored on their phone, allowing for convenient routing to an address of a friend or business associate. Users can easily access weather conditions and forecast data for their current location as well as other destinations in Australia.

Whereis Navigator will be available on selected Telstra GPS-enabled phones. Telstra customers can try Whereis Navigator by downloading the free trial directly from their phone. For additional information, visit www.garmin.com or www.telstra.com.

Press release: NAVIGON, Clear Channel Extend Highly Successful Total Traffic Network Relationship

Multi-Year Extension Puts Most Accurate Real-Time Traffic Data on NAVIGON PNDs

CHICAGO & SAN ANTONIO --(Business Wire)-- Sep. 8, 2008 NAVIGON, one of the world's leading and fastest growing providers of navigation products and solutions and Clear Channel Radio today announced a multi-year deal that will extend NAVIGON's use of Clear Channel Radio's Total Traffic Network (CCTTN). CCTTN delivers the industry's most reliable, accurate real-time traffic data to a wide range of NAVIGON's personal navigation devices spanning high-end to entry-level price points starting at $229 MSRP for the NAVIGON 2200T.

"NAVIGON and Clear Channel worked together to bring the most highly demanded navigation feature to the market in a manner that is simple for our customers to use," said Andreas Hecht, NAVIGON's president for the Americas. "We are happy to extend the relationship with Clear Channel into the future since there is no real-time traffic network that is more accurate than Clear Channel Radio's, as they control all of the content with strict operational processes, reaching more than 200 million people in 95 North American markets."

"NAVIGON was the pioneer in bringing free real-time traffic service to the portable navigation category and now takes this commitment to a new level by offering free real-time traffic on a full range of products including a genuine entry-level GPS navigator," said John Hogan, president and chief executive officer for Clear Channel Radio. "Their unwavering commitment to providing drivers with the best tools to navigate commutes and trips is unmatched and the reason why they have grown so quickly."

NAVIGON announced in August that it was making CCTTN's Real-Time Traffic available as a free lifetime subscription on a wide range of products, including its new 7200T and 2200T devices. NAVIGON offers traffic updates for free as a built-in feature that works out of the box, no subscription, no extra hardware required, no strings attached and no menu advertisements.

With more than 500,000 paid subscribers, and covering 125 metropolitan markets in four countries, CCTTN is the industry leader in providing real-time traffic data. Since 2005, Clear Channel Radio has quality tested between 125,000 and 150,000 miles per year, something no other data provider has even attempted.

In addition, the company uses a wide variety of sources to compile traffic data, including a network of reporters, traffic cameras, embedded speed sensors, police scanners, and mobile reporters. CCTTN owns, manages, and monitors all of the towers and stations. As a result, every piece of the cycle is quality-controlled by the provider.

Life360’s Mobile Emergency Network Wins Google Android Developer Challenge
Press release: Smartphone Application Allows Families and Communities to Cope With Minor Emergencies or Major Natural Disasters

Life360 was selected as a first place winner in the Google Android Developer Challenge, an international competition that vetted the best applications for Google’s upcoming Android mobile operating system. Life360 was one of the top 10 companies to be awarded $275,000. Out of 1,788 entries, it was the only winning emergency messaging and preparedness application.

Life360’s application automatically notifies families about emergency events and can send messages to selected family members even if most infrastructure has failed. Unlike alerts from previous notification systems, Life360 alerts are customized to each user; as an example, they can convey the location of the nearest shelter via turn-by-turn locations to the site using the phone’s GPS. The GPS system also allows users to track their family members’ locations in real-time.

With Life360’s community network, users can ask for help as well as assist others using a location-based request system. For example, if a user pushes the panic button on their phone, all other users nearby are notified of the event and receive streaming audio and video from the victim’s camera, allowing them to instantly assess the situation. Use of the network is not limited to major emergencies; users can post requests for relatively minor incidents like missing pets, or to let others nearby know that they have a resource or skill that may be useful for a given event.

Because the Community Network uses GPS technology, all posts have a physical location on the map, and users have the option of making alerts visible only to those nearby. While using mobile phones to communicate in emergencies is not a new concept, Life360 leverages smartphone technology to provide what the company believes represents the future of emergency and community preparedness. The service is built on a multi-channel messaging system that keeps users connected with their families, and a community network that allows neighborhoods to overcome challenges as a group. Life360 defines a Community Network is one that constantly runs in the background, but is available when needed.

“With a string of natural disasters in the last few years, and as we watch Hurricane Gustav make its way across the Southern US, we are again reminded of the importance of being properly prepared for natural disasters,” said Chris Hulls, CEO of Life360. “Life360’s application and the Android platform demonstrate how technology can make overcoming these challenges orders of magnitude easier, faster and more effective, potentially saving lives in the process.”

Life360 is currently testing its alpha product and will release a beta version to the public later this year. The Community Network will be free of charge, and the Family Manager will be available on a subscription basis.

For more information about Life360, visit www.life360.com.

For more information about the Google Android Developer Challenge, visit code.google.com/android/adc.html.

About Life360

Life360 uses web and telephony technology to help families and communities get prepared for and stay connected during minor events and major emergencies. With its patent-pending multi-channel messaging system and mobile technology, users can send a message to their entire family or neighborhood group even if most infrastructure has failed.
