Press release: New Windows CE .NET Vehicle Tracking Device Launched
August 28, 2008

Fleet tracking solutions company, Imarda, has today announced the addition of the Vector 300GWP truck tracking device to its Prolificx Vector 300 range of vehicle tracking devices. A fully programmable, field-proven, hardware platform, the Prolificx Vector 300 range is targeted towards Telematics and M2M application developers.

The Vector 300GWP truck tracking device adds WiFi and PLC4Trucks interfaces to the standard Vector 300 series feature set, which already supports GPRS, GPS, J1939, J1708, CAN, Bluetooth and other interfaces.

According to Imarda CEO Selwyn Pellett, the Vector 300GWP has been developed to meet the fleet tracking needs of truck-load and less-than-truckload where trailer tracking is a key requirement. “The inbuilt PLC4trucks interface provides the ability to monitor trailer hook and drops when used in conjunction with a PLC4Trucks compatible Tag fitted to the trailer,” explains Pellett. “The PLC4Trucks interface is supported with a full C++\.NET API which implements trailer monitoring using Imarda or third party supplied Trailer Tags.”

The addition of the WiFi interface enables the cost effective transfer of data from the vehicle tracking device to a server when the vehicle is within range of an authorised WiFi network. “WiFi is a low-cost method of exchanging data that is not time critical (such as log files and engine diagnostics) or for performing over-the-air software updates which would typically not be sent over the GPRS network for cost reasons,” says Selwyn Pellett.

Features of the Vector 300GWP device include:

Windows CE 5.0 plus .NET Compact Framework
Intel PXA270 XScale Processor
20 channel High Sensitivity SiRF STAR III GPS
GSM/GPRS communications
802.11 b/g WIFI
Internal PLC4Trucks reader

Bluetooth
USB Host and slave
Digital and Analog I\O
3 Axis Accelerometer
CAN, J1708, J1939 and RS232 interface
SD Card
Supports 12V and 24 Automotive power systems with on-board battery backup and low power wakeup modes

Press release: NAVIGON Delivers Free Real-Time Traffic Updates for Life Across Product Suite
August 28, 2008

Chicago,IL -- NAVIGON, one of te world's leading and fastest growing providers of navigation products and solutions, today announced it is making Free Real-Time Traffic Updates for Life standard on a wide range of its new products this fall. Free traffic updates will be available on NAVIGON devices spanning high-end to entry-level price points starting at $229 MSRP.

NAVIGON is continuing to deliver on what has proved to be a category-changing move. In 2007 the company shattered the subscription model, becoming the first to offer lifetime traffic updates out of the box on its top-tier models. NAVIGON maintains its lead in innovation within the industry by offering traffic updates for free as a built-in feature across the product suite, whereas other GPS manufacturers charge users monthly subscription fees for similar services and may require the purchase of additional traffic receivers. NAVIGON's traffic feature will work out of the box, no subscription, no extra hardware required, no strings attached. Using real-time traffic information delivered via an FM receiver built into each device, NAVIGON's newest generation of products will let 200,000,000 consumers in 95 North American markets route around traffic.

"We were very excited to be the first to offer Free Lifetime Traffic last year and are thrilled to bring it to the next level," says Andreas Hecht, NAVIGON's president for the Americas. "We see traffic updates as being critical to the core navigation experience and felt it was very important to make it available across the entire product portfolio."

This isn't the first time NAVIGON has broken from GPS Group Think. Earlier this year, it introduced NAVIGON FreshMaps, providing up to 12 map updates for three years for little more than most GPS device providers charge for a single map update ($79.00 MSRP), emphatically resolving the map update dilemma.

Unlike the complex activation process used by competing devices, NAVIGON's Free Real-Time Traffic Updates for Life is live as soon as the user turns the unit on. Users receive real-time traffic alerts through iconic on-screen warnings indicating incidents and congestion along the current route. The NAVIGON devices provide detailed information regarding the severity of the incident as well as routing options around the congestion. For more information about NAVIGON's Free Real-Time Traffic Updates for Life, visit www.navigon.com.

Press release: u-blox 5 GPS Locator for Microsoft MapPoint 2009 USB Stick

Thalwil, Switzerland -- u-blox Holding AG today announced that Microsoft Corporation selected its latest positioning engine, u-blox 5, for a new "GPS Locator" USB stick. The “GPS Locator” USB stick will be bundled with the next release of MapPoint, Microsoft’s business travel and map software package.

The new u-blox 5 GPS chipset is a highly integrated, cost-efficient GPS engine that offers users accurate positioning in a small package without compromising on performance. GPS devices are often bulky and too big to connect to a notebook without a USB cable. With u-blox’ innovative u-blox 5 GPS chipset, Microsoft was finally able to overcome this problem, offering users a compact, easy to use GPS-enabled USB stick that feels very much like memory sticks they are used to.

The “GPS Locator” USB stick provides users with reliable positioning and a USB 2.0 port for fast and easy data transfer all in one tiny package that easily plugs into any computer.

Microsoft expects that this bundled solution, leveraging on Microsoft’s leading location software with u-blox’ GPS excellence, will further expand the market reach of MapPoint.

"We are very proud that Microsoft uses u-blox 5 for its new MapPoint package," said Nikolaos Papadopoulos, President of u-blox America. "The ultra-fast start-up time of the u-blox 5 positioning engine, added to the engine’s high sensitivity, as well as cost and space efficiency make it ideal for mass-market applications like Microsoft's innovative MapPoint location product."

The 2009 edition of MapPoint with u-blox 5-based “GPS Locator” USB Stick is expected to be on the shelves in August 2008.

Press release: SiRF Hosts 2nd Annual Location 2.0 Summit - Location-based Services (LBS)

August 29, 2008

Industry Leaders Gather to Make Location Fundamental to Everything Mobile

SAN JOSE,CA-- Building on the success of last year's inaugural event, SiRF Technology Holdings, Inc. (SIRF: sirf technology hldgs inc com SIRF 1.89, -0.11, -5.5%) , a leading provider of GPS-powered location platforms, today announced the second annual Location 2.0 Summit as well as the ten finalists chosen to give Fast-Pitch presentations at the event. More than 200 of the top global location industry executives are expected to gather at the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco on September 10, 2008 for this invitation-only event, which this year also introduces the People's Choice Awards to highlight innovation in the LBS industry.

This year's event will feature keynote addresses from Christof Hellmis, director of Navigation and Routing Solutions at Nokia and Dr. Vincent Tao, senior director of the Microsoft Local, Mobile Search and Virtual Earth business unit at Microsoft. Other featured speakers include Joe Astroth, vice president of Location Services; Randy Frantz, director of Telecommunications and LBS at ESRI; Steve Glagow, vice president of Market Operations at Orange-France Telecom; Niren Hiro, vice president of business for Admob; Masaaki Maeda, senior vice president of the Service and Technology Division at NTT DoCoMo; Rich Miner, vice president of Mobile Technology for Google; Magnus Nilsson, CEO of Wayfinder Systems; Jerry Panagrossi, vice president and general manager of North America for Symbian, Inc.; Ed Schmit, associate director of the Enterprise Developer Program at AT&T; Brad Smith, technology editor at Wireless Week and Eric White, general manager of Handheld Solutions at Trimble Mobile Solutions.

"The Location 2.0 Summit has quickly become a popular event for global industry leaders, and based on the success of last year's event, we anticipate another standing-room-only crowd again this year," said Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of marketing for SiRF. "In keeping with spirit of this event, attendees will be able to use their wireless handsets to vote for their favorite Fast-Pitch presentations, and the winner in each Fast-Pitch category will receive a People's Choice Award during the evening award ceremony."

The Location 2.0 Summit attracts attendees from across the entire location industry ecosystem -- operators and service providers, device manufacturers and enabling platform providers as well as content and application developers -- to explore the future direction of technologies for making location fundamental to everything mobile. Attendees will hear and discuss success stories and proven strategies as well as critical challenges for the location industry in the mobile and wireless space.

Fast-Pitch Finalists
This year's event introduces unique three-minute Fast-Pitch presentations -- high-intensity sessions that demonstrate the benefits of using the power of location to enhance the daily lives of individuals, enterprises and communities. Developers will pitch their innovative LBS applications to the top global location industry executives in attendance at the conclusion of each of the panel discussions.

The Fast-Pitch nominees that were submitted were judged by Kanwar Chadha and wireless industry analyst, Andrew Seybold; finalists have been chosen for each of the three panel discussion sessions.

For the consumer Fast-Pitch category, the finalists are Dial Directions for its product DIR-ECT-IONS; Locr for its product locr.com; and Loopt for its product Loopt. For the enterprise Fast-Pitch category, the finalists are LuckyCal, Inc. for its product LuckyCal with Predictive Presence Technology, Pacific DataVision for its product Locator for SkyMailTM, and Proxpro, Inc. for its product Prompt.

For the next generation technologies Fast-Pitch category, the finalists are Knowtate for its Knowtations product, Microsoft Corporation for the product Location Prediction for Drivers, Planet 9 Studios and its product RayGun and Sense Networks for its CitySense product.

Panel Discussions
The Fast-Pitch presentations will be an integral part of the three panel discussions:

Consumer Panel: Location and the Wireless Ecosystem
Enterprise Panel: Using Location to Beat the Economy
Future Technologies: One World, One Network for LBS?
Unlike typical conference-style panel discussions, these interactive sessions will delve deeply into the topics being covered and allow attendees to take part. Held in question-and-answer format to promote audience participation, the panels will conclude with unique three-minute presentations from the finalists of the Fast-Pitch competition, which will feature the most innovative new LBS application and technologies in beta or on the market today. Participants will be able to utilize SMS-based voting to select their favorites from each group of Fast Pitches, and the winner of each Fast-Pitch category will receive People's Choice Awards.

Awards
The afternoon will conclude with closing remarks and the Location 2.0 Summit Awards, an extraordinary opportunity to promote excellence and celebrate achievement in the industry. In addition to the Leadership Award and Pioneer Award presented to honor and recognize outstanding members of the location ecosystem, this year's event also features the new People's Choice Awards presented to the most popular Fast-Pitch presentations. The cocktail reception accompanying the Awards will provide an opportunity for attendees to make new acquaintances, interact with other executives and leaders within the location industry and build strategic partnerships.

Agenda
The Summit will commence at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon in the St. Regis Ballroom hosted by Andrew Seybold, a renowned expert on the convergence of wireless, mobility and the Internet. During his noontime opening remarks, Mr. Seybold will be sharing his insights on the most effective location-based services strategies that he has championed from the very early days of the industry.

After the luncheon, opening remarks and the opening keynote address, the Location 2.0 Summit will continue with consumer and enterprise keynote addresses and the three panel discussions and Fast-Pitch presentation sessions. The Summit will conclude with closing remarks, the Awards program and the cocktail reception. More information on the Location 2.0 Summit and Awards can be found at www.sirf.com/location2summit.

CALGARY, ALBERTA----Cell-Loc Location Technologies Inc. (TSX VENTURE:XCT), reports that the Company comes closer to positive cash flow as its quarterly loss continues to decrease. Reported loss for the three months ended June 30, 2008 is $1.09 million or $0.03 per share.

Press release: Datacom Announces Second Quarter 2008 Financial Results

Datacom Wireless Corporation ("Datacom" or "the Company")(TSX VENTURE:DAT), a Canadian leader in the design, development and marketing of mission critical vehicle fleet management and theft prevention solutions today announced its financial results for the three-month period ended June 30, 2008.

First Quarter Growth Highlights:

- During the second quarter of 2008, the following new customers and/or units were added:

-- 41 new Mobicom customers (commercial market)

--- 502 Mobicom units sold (335 in 2007)

-- 486 Mobilus units (consumer market) (656 in 2007)

-- 4,860 Mobiguard units (consumer market) (2,609 in 2007)

-- 187 Vigil GPS units (consumer market) (nil in 2007)

- Eric Morin was appointed General Manager with responsibility for the Corporation's day-to-day operations. Mr. Morin originally joined the Corporation in June 2002 and was named Vice-President of Operations in February 2007. As General Manager, he will be responsible for the Corporation's day-to-day operations, in addition to retaining his duties as Vice-President of Operations.

- Datacom now has thee local resources operating in its Calgary sales office. Sales figures for Calgary are in line with the Corporation's expectations.

- As explained in our press release issued on July 30, 2008, the Company decided to reorient activities around the sale of Mobicom Fleet Management Solutions and progressively terminate Mobilus and Vigil products' activities. We refer you to the Management Discussion and Analysis with respect to the June 30, 2008 Financial Statements and the press release of July 30, 2008 for more details.

- Also, during the quarter, the Corporation introduced its new all-inclusive instalment sales plan, which enables customers to make monthly payments over a three-year period covering equipment and service charges. Under this plan, the Corporation will have a competitive market offer; in addition, customer feedback has been very positive. The Corporation has begun seeking private financing for the all-inclusive instalment sales plan with a view to limiting the potentially negative short-term impact on the Corporation's cash position if the Corporation provides the financing.

- Finally, as at June 30, 2008, 3,024 Web-based fixed wireless management systems (Rosemount 753R with ITraX) have been sold. The Corporation took part in the development of this product in association with a subsidiary of Emerson Electric Co. and continues to provide development and IT support services. The original agreement between the Corporation and Emerson Electric Co. under which royalties are paid to Datacom based on the number of units sold expired in July 2008. Discussions are under way to renew this agreement.

Press release: ISPRS Approves Beijing Declaration August 31, 2008

A Declaration approved by delegates at the ISPRS Congress calls on international communities to work together and commit adequate resources to promote the peaceful use of geospatial technology for the benefit of society and the environment.

The document reaffirms the ISPRS commitment to realise the full potential of information from imagery through research and development, scientific networking, international co-operation, inter-disciplinary integration and education and training. It also sets out a number ways in which the ISPRS and international communities can work to this end.

The Declaration was made by the General Assembly of ISPRS at its XXIst Congress held in Beijing, and was announced at a press conference on July 11th attended by the former minister of Science and Technology of China, Xu Guanhua and some 30 members of the Chinese press.

The Declaration draws attention to the wide application of Earth observation technologies in fields such as socio-economic sustainable development; management of natural disasters, conservation of cultural heritage; sustainable use of water resources; and environment and health.

During the past four years new forms of co-operation and knowledge-sharing have emerged, most notably the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) and its program to establish a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). These initiatives must be supported and developed. The importance of geospatial data is also recognized by the International Council for Science (ICSU).

The Declaration affirms the importance of photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information sciences for sustainable development in the 21st century. It recognises the responsibility of non-governmental organisations to promote the peaceful use of space, airborne and terrestrial technology. It also highlights the importance of increasing public recognition of photogrammetry, remote sensing and the spatial information sciences and calls on international communities to work together to achieve these aims.

About ISPRS The International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing is a non-governmental organization devoted to the development of international cooperation for the advancement of knowledge, research, development, education and training in the photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information sciences. ISPRS also promotes the application of geospatial information to contribute to the well-being of humanity and the sustainability of the environment. The Society operates without any discrimination on grounds of race, religion, nationality, or political philosophy. ISPRS has 186 members representing government, academia and industry in over 90 countries. ISPRS is a member of ICSU, The International Council for Science and of GEO, The Group on Earth Observation, and is an accredited NGO at the United Nations.

Beijing Declaration
(Approved on July 9th, 2008)

We, members of The International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) and participants of the XXIst ISPRS Congress in Beijing, recognize the importance of imagery to measure and monitor the natural and man-made features on planet Earth and to explore other planets of the solar system, especially after witnessing the important role of photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information systems in the rescue operation and damage assessment of the recent devastating natural disasters.

We note scientific developments reported during the technical sessions of the Congress and the great progress made in the use of imagery from many different platforms, with numerous sensors, for a wide variety of applications. We particularly note:

1. Wide applications of Earth observation technologies and tools to the fields of socio-economic sustainable development, natural disaster prediction, mitigation and response, maintenance of biodiversity, cultural heritage conservation, global and environmental climate change monitoring, energy exploration and management, land use and land cover inventory, food security, sustainable use of water resources, and human habitat, environment and health.
2. Significant technological achievement in the acquisition, processing, interpretation and analysis of aerial and satellite imagery, advances of airborne and terrestrial lidar, development of imaging radar technology, increased maturity of small satellites and of geo-sensor networks, validation, calibration and certification of digital cameras and other types of sensors, automated information extraction from all forms of imagery, distributed data processing for information services, and multidimensional data modeling.
3. Great progress in developing new forms of cooperation and knowledge sharing, including the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) and its program to establish a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), and the International Council for Science (ICSU) Geo-unions and its activities in Africa, and the Joint Board of Geospatial Information Societies.
Recalling that the 2002 World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) stressed the importance of Earth observation for advancing sustainable development, we strongly believe that photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information sciences are essential to ensure sustainable development in the 21st century. We further recognize that non-governmental organizations, especially ISPRS, have the responsibility to promote the peaceful use of space, airborne and terrestrial technology and the realization of the full potential of imagery for the benefit of society and for the maintenance of sustainable growth in all nations.
We reaffirm our commitment to implement the vision for the 21st century of ISPRS, which aims to realize the full potential of information from imagery by encouraging and facilitating research and development, advancing knowledge by scientific networking, promoting international cooperation, pursuing inter-disciplinary integration, facilitating education and training, enhancing and exploring new applications, developing public recognition of photogrammetry, remote sensing and the spatial information sciences. We therefore call on international communities to support the Cape Town declaration of GEO and:
1. to commit adequate investment and active engagement in scientific research and development, education and training, and capacity and infrastructure building;
2. to promote the sharing of imaging and ranging technology and data for scientific research and peaceful applications; and
3. to encourage constructive dialogue and close cooperation and collaboration between scientists, governments, public and private sectors, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations and institutions.
We further call for a contribution from everyone to establish and operate a new silk road for information from imagery, leading to a people-centered and sustainable development-oriented information society.

Press release: 3D Navigation to Support Budapest Ambulances

The latest donation in the charity program called "Navigation for the Emergency Services" is 10 navigation devices for the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, donated jointly by Nav N Go Kft. and NAVON Kft. The devices and software will support ambulances operating out of stations in Budapest. The main aim of the gift is to replace the navigation devices that were recently stolen from two ambulances.

Ambulances equipped with the most up-to-date navigation
With this donation, "Navigation for the Emergency Services" reaches yet another part of the country. The charity program has previously supported ambulance services in the Hungarian counties of Győr-Moson-Sopron, Komárom-Esztergom and Veszprém, as well as the city of Orosháza, and now the most up-to-date navigation systems are operating in the capital city ambulances. The Budapest Ambulance Service has already used GPS navigation before, but in the last two weeks, two ambulances were broken into, and the navigation devices were stolen.

When Nav N Go Kft. and Navon Kft. heard the news, the companies decided to replace the stolen devices as soon as possible, and to donate a further 8 NAVON wide-screen navigation devices with 8 sets of Nav N Go software, worth half a million Hungarian forints in total. This means that even more ambulances will benefit from using satellite navigation. In an emergency the digital navigator finds the quickest route to any address, right down to the house number; and thanks to the special "Emergency Vehicle" option that is available in the NAVON N450 navigation devices, the program can find the shortest route that exists to the destination, over-ruling the normal traffic restrictions.

"We still don't have a navigation system in every ambulance,” said Dr. Zsigmond Göndöcs, the director of the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, "but the ones we have received so far, mostly from donations, have been very useful in many situations. That's why we lost more than just the value of the devices when they were stolen. The social responsibility of Nav N Go Kft. and NAVON Kft. is proved by their immediate response to our problem, and by their donation of ten devices.”

"Nav N Go Kft. has already donated navigation devices to support the work of the ambulance services several times before, so you could describe this donation as continuing a tradition” said András Fazakas, Nav N Go's Chief Operating Officer. "It is a tremendous pleasure for us that these ten devices will help the Budapest ambulance services to reach their destinations in time, because being in time can often save lives.”

This is the first time that the ambulance drivers have been able to try out the advantages of Nav N Go iGO 8 software, which was developed by Hungarians and is in 3 dimensions. This means that in addition to showing the route precisely, with a voice giving directions, the navigation device also helps drivers find their way around with lifelike 3D images of the surrounding buildings and landmarks.

Life-saving navigation in the whole country!
The charity program doesn't end here. The aim is to have satellite navigation devices in every emergency vehicle in the country as soon as possible. To help achieve this aim, the organizations taking part in the charity program have set up a website: http://navigacio.info.hu, where you can read more details about the program, and find out how you can help.

Press release: NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns(TM) Now Available in Europe

Historic Traffic Database Includes Nearly 200,000 Kilometers of Coverage in Germany

Chicago,IL-- NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions announces the availability of NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns(TM) in Germany. This is the first NAVTEQ traffic product available in Europe and marks the beginning of a dedicated effort to expand NAVTEQ's content-rich, high-quality traffic information outside of North America.

NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns is a historical database with information about the average traffic flow velocity for specific sections of roadways, and enables more accurate navigation calculations so drivers can avoid typical congestion areas and rely on more accurate arrival time estimates. NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns has the capability to calculate the most ideal route based on historical traffic flow patterns, which change for various times of the day as well as days of the week. NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns is a unique traffic product in that the traffic data actually functions as an attribute as the NAVTEQ map. Since it relies on historical data, it can be immediately integrated into systems compiling our map database.

For commuters, emergency service providers and surface vehicle fleets, NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns will provide routing information to avoid traffic-congested areas, improve arrival time estimates based on likely traffic conditions at the time of day and day of the week, and reduce fuel costs.

NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns for Germany includes:

Launched with nearly 200,000 kilometers of roads in Germany, including more than 90% of the largest and most heavily traveled roads in more than 15 major urban areas
Five traffic models (Monday, Tuesday-Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) which provide the most relevant historical traffic information available for specific travel days
24-hour speed values in one-hour increments, which provide the most relevant historical traffic information for specific times of day
Coverage from the largest major freeways down to smaller neighborhood roads, resulting in optimal detours and city routing
In North America, the NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns product covers over 910,000 miles across the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada.

"Customers have been asking for us to expand our very successful NAVTEQ Traffic solutions outside of North America, and our launch of NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns in Germany marks the beginning of a dedicated effort to offer European commuters quality traffic information that will save them time and money," said Howard Hayes, Vice President, Traffic for NAVTEQ.

Press release: NAVTEQ Selected by Caltrans as Part of Team Awarded US Department of Transportation’s SAFE TRIP-21 Contract

Company to provide navigable map database, real-time traffic integration and distribution, Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) prototype applications and More

Chicago,IL-- NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has been selected by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to support deployment of the "Connected Traveler" program as part of Caltrans' award of the SAFE TRIP-21 contract by the US DOT. California's program, which will enable SAFE TRIP-21, is termed the "Connected Traveler".

Caltrans was recently awarded $2.9 million by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), as part of Caltrans' $12.9 million program to test various ITS technology applications designed to reduce gridlock, improve traveler safety and enhance public transportation services.

The program is intended to accelerate deployment of Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) using consumer mobile devices to deliver various VII services. Some key services and applications being tested under this program include collection of real-time traffic data utilizing consumer mobile devices using various communications protocols (such as DSRC, WIMAX, WIFI, cellular and satellite); use of commercial and transit vehicles enabled with consumer devices as collection technology; and implementation of in-vehicle alert functionality.

In collaboration with UC-Berkeley's Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and the California Center for Innovative Transportation (CCIT), GPS-equipped Nokia mobile phones as probes will be deployed to collect real-time traffic information. The real-time speed and flow data will be transmitted to local and remote traffic management centers from the phones of several thousand volunteer commuters and transit vehicles traveling within a 200-mile radius of the Bay Area. Using its proprietary processing technology, NAVTEQ will aggregate and process the probe data, integrate it with other NAVTEQ Traffic(TM) data sources and distribute it back to the travelers who provide the probe data from their mobile phones. The data will be referenced to the NAVTEQ map and will also be available for distribution, via a variety of channels, to multiple consumer devices including personal navigation devices, in-vehicle systems and mobile phones.

"Congestion and congestion-related problems are some of the largest issues faced by state DOTs as well as the traveling public. This phase of SAFE TRIP-21 is a quantum change in traffic information services because it involves drivers as part of the solution by transforming them, via their GPS-enabled mobile phones, into sources of traffic data," said Caltrans Chief Deputy Director Randell H. Iwasaki. "Working with NAVTEQ and Nokia, two leaders in the traffic information and mobile device industries, respectively, we are confident this demonstration will accelerate the viability of consumer-based probes as ever-present sources of accurate traffic data."

To support the overall VII network communications, a central objective of Safe Trip 21, NAVTEQ will also provide specific roadway signage attributes such as speed limits, highway exit information, and incident information. The objective of the project is to advance the development of a VII system, which uses WiFi and Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) to alert drivers of potentially unsafe conditions.

"NAVTEQ has a long history of involvement in ITS, and being included by Caltrans as part of these demonstrations is really exciting. Being a part of this initiative further confirms NAVTEQ's role in accelerating the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems and services, which is an important commitment we continue to make to the travelling public," said John MacLeod, Executive Vice President, Connected Services for NAVTEQ.

The SAFE TRIP-21 technology will be launched and displayed at the 15th Annual World Congress on ITS, which takes place November 16-20, 2008 in New York, New York. To experience SAFE TRIP-21 and other NAVTEQ enabled ITS technologies, visit the NAVTEQ booth (#401) at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Additional development and testing of these technologies will continue through at least 2009.
