. . . of cause i wrote it down in a safe place! but my male memory has forgotten the safe place!!!!

I use Password Agent Lite, then there's only one password to remember.

I suppose someone's going to tell me it's spyware now! Sad

I just use a word document with all my relevant passwords and companies they are linked to. Then i just encrypt that file with just 1 password. Same outcome as PA but you don't trust anyone else to look after your files and they are not sent over the internet!

Works for me Very Happy

Off message perhaps but worth knowing to improve security and our wallets. Try Roboform2Go. (http://www.roboform.com) Free trial - download to a memory pen and when you take it out of the PC it erases all the passwords you have just used from the PC memory cache. Also generates secure passwords for you! Give the memory pen with a complicated password and there you go!

Dennis

Why not delete tt6 and upgrade to tt7 and get all the advantages of the newer system. You will have to still have to activate the UK map, but if TT still give you Censored there are always other ways, that I am not condoning in anyway.

Clearly you are condoning these 'other ways' or you would not have mentioned them !

As said above. You say you are not condoning it but discussion of piracy is prohibited here.

It's a puerile little trick, like putting a drawing pin on teacher's chair!! He's picked up some code from a funny website which displays your connection details to YOU. It displays different details to me and to everybody else. What's happening is the code persuades YOUR computer to put the details there, he hasn't the faintest idea what those details are - he sees his OWN details under his own signature.

Some people think it's a sign of spotty nerd. However, other people might genuinely be frightened by it - I hope he realises that and removes it (before I convene a Great Big Grand Meeting to get him told!) - this is after all, a family site, with all kinds of users, not just nerds.

I think these add ons should be banned as they exceed the forum rules on the number lines permitted within a signature - DennisN perhaps yu could suggest this in the thread about sigs elsewhere in the forum, otherwise I will when I get back to the PC - Mike

I'll go get me pointy hat!!

p800 you better get rid of it before we send in the bloodhounds and stuff - the clock's ticking!! I don't care about the number of lines - it scared the bloomers off my old granny and she means a lot to me.

at the risk of being banned, or perhaps chased by an angry mob and beaten to a pulp one night, can I make a comment? Do you Mods realise how heavy handed and unwelcoming the site appears when you all appear at once to make a fuss about comparatively little?

Ok, you say he used bad language (I didn't see it). The post was edited and a warning given, isn't that enough? Why the threats to get the dogs out? You can't really complain about a granny being scared by that box and then make threats like that - what happens if his granny was scared by your threat, or mine, or someone else's? Or is it one rule for Members and another for Moderators?

As for the box, it's so scary I thought the details were his and went right past them................ does it actually do any harm? Ok, maybe the wording is in poor taste, but do you think people actually notice things like that, let alone get worked up about them? Does it really justify so many comments from Mods, in such an aggressive manner?

No one else has bothered about it, but you feel it necessary to make several comments about it.

And you have rules about the number of lines in a signature? Words fail me. Next thing you'll be imposing rules about the length of a Members name...

As I said, behaviour like this makes the board seem so unfriendly, but maybe that's your intention. He's a new member maybe he did what he does on other boards without anyone complaining? Correction and a POLITE warning should be enough, no need for aggression, or is it ok for members to be aggressive in posts as well?

Ok, I've had the cheek to comment on the way you run the board......... I'll check under my car for explosives tomorrow and check for landmines when I get home, oh, and install at least another 6 anti-virus, malware and spyware products before breakfast. Is that the impression you want to create?

Without active Members, you won't have a forum, and if you create an unpleasant environment, people will just come here, ask a question and disappear until the next problem rather than actually enjoying themselves here and hanging around to help others.

Sorry, but I want tuppenceworth here.
I am no nerd or geek or computer expert, but his little silver notice made me sit up and start worrying about my own firewalls and stuff.
I even sent him a PM asking him about it, but he didn't bother to reply. I relaxed only after seeing Dennis's reply.
I would just like to say thanks to the likes of Dennis and Mike who do keep a level of discipline on this website. There are thousands of websites with forums out there that cater for the juveniles. If p800 doesn't come back, then it is no huge loss.

The reason you didn't see it was down to very effective and efficient action by one of the moderators, it is generally accepted that when we edit a post we also add a reason as to why it was done, this can also include a reminder about foul language.

cecilrhode wrote:

There were no threats, just a few hints in the general direction that the offending item should be removed, threats don't serve any purpose, promises are generally more acceptable.

cecilrhode wrote:

Hardly, the difference is often that we have a far better understanding of the site rules and apply them.

I think you will find that most people who visit this forum receive first rate advice from friendly people, argumentative posts are not encountered too often - I have explained some of the points made above, if this thread goes off the rails/ off the original topic I will remove all offending posts later in the morning Mike

Are you telling me you actually thought my two posts on the subject were threatening? They were mostly a gentle joke - how the heck does one get dogs out on the internet? We ARE concerned that someone will find that little box frightening and we felt that the approach of ridiculous threats of dogs, whipping and so forth far better than coming the heavy hand. Heavy hand you personally will NEVER see (unless it's done to you) - that approach is a simple, straight PM saying "stop it or else" or even "I have chopped your profile to pieces, it's not allowed".

As for rules about signature size - remember, your signature appears on every single one of your posts. Change your signature now and it will appear on every post since your very first one. So the size you use up is multiplied by the number of posts you've made. The same applies to everybody who posts. I'm a computer internet dumbo, so I don't understand these things, but somebody tells me that bandwidth is a consideration and the more you use on things like this, the less brilliant is the site performance. I simply don't know, so I have to believe what I'm told.

One final point about "all piling in". We are scattered throughout the land, not sitting in a nice little group together. For myself, typing is not entirely natural, so anything more than a quick sentence takes me absolute ages to complete and post. By which time, maybe someone else, or several someone elses have posted too. We just try our best. We do NOT as a matter of principal come heavy handed, this site is friendly and we want it to stay that way.

Well said DennisN. I am fairly up to speed with computing but I have to admit I checked my firewall settings etc. as the silver box showed MY details. The box was generated from a software company named Danasoft and was probably intended as a "laugh". Some laugh!

My my, aren't some people tetchy. If you can't obey the rules of the site then go elsewhere. A lot of forums are not well moderated and are open to all manner of abuse so I don't go there. I am sorry if my post about the "silver box" caused a furore with some, but I was concerned that my details were published for all to see. As I enjoy this particular forum I wanted to know if these details were redily available to all, leaving me open to yet more spam. I really don't want any more Fake Rolex or viagra!!!!

I don't think you caused the fuss. It was the guy who posted the spoof that displays YOUR details only to you on your PC. Everyone else only see their details. Unless you are in the know, people think their details are visible to everybody. Considering all the ways your details can be "found" these days such spoofs are no longer funny.

I don't know, you post a helpful hint for the benefit of everybody and all you get is hassle. Wont' go there again.
