Does the "accuracy" report ever show anything other than "Excellent"?

I seem to get this as soon as I get any sort of lock.

It is currently locked to 3 satellites (inside the house) and jumping around all over the place. There are track marks about 200 yds either side of where I actually am.

I don't really expect accuracy while indoors but the accuracy report still reads "excellent"

I get excellent even when it is only using 3 satellites (and therefore only capable of getting a 2D fix). The fist issued software used to say 'good' and 'poor' but not the latest beta version.

The new software has the accuracy as a measurement. Not seen any better than 16ft up to now though.

1.18-9 seems to be the latest beta download so I wonder where 1.2 came from?

16ft seems pretty damned good to me compared to what it was like before SA was turned off. I am sat in my lounge now and that is the distance between me and the television, less than the length of 3 adults laying head to toe. Do you really need greater accuracy than that outdoors when walking or cycling? You may have to poke about a bit if you are Geocaching I suppose but it is good enough to show you where you are on a footpath or where you are on barren ground between the craggy outcrop and the hill summit. It will even pinpoint your car if you have parked it in a field full of cars for a big event!

But it's the difference between the top and bottom of any cliff (e.g. in heavy fog) or (which is the situation I will be in next week) being afloat or on the submerged rock. This is why they should only ever be an aid to navigation - not a substitute. Don't get me wrong; I use GPS all the time for walking, cycling and occasional sailing - but you won't find us using the auto-helm on the yacht next week - too many rocks off the West coast of Scotland!

philpugh, I agree with you 110% on the fact that GPS should only be used as a navigation aid. I certainly wouldn't want to rely on it for accuracy when navigating along the cliff tops on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path for example.

What I was trying to say was, I thought that compared with pre May 1, 2000 when SA was turned on you were lucky to know which side of a field you were on with an accuracy of sometimes no better than 100m, in comparison with today's units with their Sirf III chipsets and SA turned off that 16ft is very accurate indeed. In the situation of dense fog or indeed, as I found myself a couple of years ago in white-out on the Brecon Beacons, you can steer yourself more or less safely away from danger and back to base even with 16ft accuracy.

Happy and safe sailing next week off the West coast of Scotland, another beautiful part of our Isles. Hope the weather is kind for you!
