I've written another unimaginatively title piece of software, called Vehicle Utility. It allows you to split a Garmin SRF file, and save out the 3D vehicle graphics. Once you've played around with them, you can join them back up again (rather like Voice Utility).

i was playing with a similar thing on a website i found but it didn't work properly as the newer versions of the .srf files changed formats slightly...!!!
also, how much hassle is it to get 2 lots of 36 images at 10degree changes?? to be honest i couldn't be bothered :D

Neither could I...
I'm only supporting the 3D model at the moment, and also it's not really necessary to use 10 degree steps.
For my "rubber duck" example I only used 12 pictures (ie: 30 degree steps), doubling them up as necessary (ie: 350/0/10 degrees are the same picture, similar for 20/30/40 etc.)
In practice, the vehicle display rarely turns more than +/-90 degress - so you could acheive the same affect with only 7 pictures!

If you filled every image with a static image it would still work then? TBH the animated cursor seems a complete waste of time to me, don't know why they bothered and making it so complex has locked them out of a very popular features, customising the cursor.
If you can fill every frame with a static image we could at least then offer users a custom cursor of their own car albeit without any animation?

No disrespect to Ash for creating his utility 'cos I appreciate that for the good of the community, but I have to say I could get along with these custom cursor / vehicle thingmies.
When I first got my C510, I tried a few, and found it distracting, really, and went back to the simple, 3-D arrow.

A simple custom cursor replacing the arrow is nice as TomTom can handle but the animated thingumabob is too much IMHO.
Of course it isn't necessary but it is nice No as for mp3 players, book readers, photo viewers etc, I could happily live without all of them! _________________ Darren Griffin

Oh it's not the necessity of it. I suspect I'm firmly a function over form guy, though.
I think really what I want (apart from the moon onna stick...) is a sat nav that does it's core functions perfectly, no funky routes, a reasonable degree of flexibility and options, reliable traffic info (to factor in to routes), the Garmin way of dealing with POIs (ie capable of being speed aware). Reception, screen performance (in terms of being seen in differing conditions, and refresh rate), speed of calculation and recalculation, and detection of deviation from route, plus walking modes, would all be huge plusses for me.
But having said that, other functionality, I'd use - I wouldn't necessarily buy for it, mind - but all other things being equal, I'd prefer to have it. Not that I necessarily buy that a sat nav is the ideal choice for convergence device.
Other aesthetic things don't really draw me, though. TTS I can sort of see the plusses, still a bit undecided about speech recognition - haven't really tried it or used it in anger (in my direct household, there's an I3, a C510T, TT510, and I also "look after" (configure, update, explain ;-)) a TT520 for a close relative).
The cursor things just irritated me, though, when I tried them, but other bells and whistles that actually add value above aesthetic, I can appreciate, so long as the core functions aren't compromised.

100% agree, most of them could be easily achieved as well. TTS is something I can manage without but having used it (TT version, Garmin's is poor IMHO) I do prefer it.
TMC is something I simply don't rely on as it's very poor. I look forward to seeing if TT's HD traffic is the Xanadu they claim.
I'll admit to being a TT user but have been testing a Nuvi760 for a while now. It's OK but has poor refresh, too dumbed down for me and the mount design with TMC hanging off it is dire. _________________ Darren Griffin

Yes, you could have all images the same to get a static cursor - I do have to partially agree with you that Garmin have made this overly complicated (especially having the frontal views which don't seem to ever be displayed, outside of the vehicle selection menu).

What I would like to see is a vehicle icon that has a definite mark that represents the GPS 'position' on the road. On most of the cars it appears to be in the centre of the icon (roughly). It's useful to know when navigating in towns when the roads are close together.
