Hi all,
As part of our vehicle management we're looking at a way to track specific vehicles around our estate (a large port). Initially we're looking for something that will log vehicle location, direction and speed every few minutes (or more often if possible) and log it to an SD card or similar for retrospective review of where the vehicle has been during its shift. However, looking a bit further ahead I suspect that when management see what can be achieved we will expand to real-time tracking and geofencing via GPRS/SMS. I can see devices that will do one or the other, but are there any devices that will allow you to do both, telling the device to log to card or send via GPRS based on a configuration setting? This would obviously avoid us having to buy new kit in 6 months time.

Thanks in advance,
Mark.

Depending on your timescales you may find it's cheaper to buy simple GPS loggers for now and then investigate telecommunications based solutions whne the business case is justified.

For logging - take a look at the Qstarz 1000 or it's later sibling the 1300.

However - a word of caution. If this is to monitor staff (as well as vehicle) location then these devices probably won't be robust enough to withstand all the accidents they will have whilst in operation Laughing

There are devices emerging that combine phone and gps with remote tracking capabilities. A link to one was posted in these forums a short while ago - I think this is the link

Hi Phil.
Thanks for the reply.

I think that's the route that we'll have to go down.

Fortunately we're just using them for tracking vehicles, so we're okay in that respect. Working on a port I'm sure there'd be a disproportionate number that got 'accidentally dropped in the dock' if we started tracking staff. Wink

I think the QStarz 1000 Platinum is the way that we're going to go. I'll get one to have a play with, but, on the face of it, it's ideal.

Cheers,
Mark.
