Sorry, strumble, I didn't see your post, even though I previewed before submitting, or I would have delayed mine for a while! Smile

I believe there should be no edit facility at all. As GJF says, if you preview before submitting there's no need to edit.

And not just the subject flow, but also the content. Here am I agreeing with Anita, but if the edit were available to her and she edited to say she wholly agreed with editing I'd be at last proven to be a plonker!!

There's another facility available on EVERY forum - called "Brain" - proper usage of this facility can completely eliminate the need for editing.

I'd have to agree. We never used to allow edit but there were many complaints and so it was introduced.

Although it doesn't get abused often I would prefer it was not available full stop but as forums operate in a grey area between democracy and plutocracy we conceded and allowed it!

What I'd prefer (and I'm not sure what phpBB offers in this area) is the option to edit only until the post has been replied to. This allows quick edits to correct mishtooks but prevents anyone from abusing the facility and corrupting the flow of a thread.

Yes, I remember that, and spoke out against it at the time. I believe it was a small, but vocal, minority who complained, and was sorry you gave in to them.

But does the odd typo or spelling mistake really matter? Anything more important can be corrected in a follow-up post, and it would be very foolish of anybody to follow the advice given in a post without reading the rest of the thread first.

But it was the Team's decision and, as such, must be accepted by the membership.

Trouble is that this site has a whole spectrum of misery's, timid, laid back, happy, (me Wink ) annoying and some cantankerous people, you can't please them all.

Before 'Edit' was allowed, members often used to take the p** just because of a typo, so i find edit a great tool.
Some posts are returned quickly so it's difficult getting the spelling and particularly the grammer right first time.

The EDIT feature has never been available in the Off Topic area but, in other areas, I'm sure it used to only be available until a reply had been posted - although now it appears that posts may be edited ad infinitum.

Retrospective editing invariably seems to disrupt the content flow of a thread and having to read posts multiple times to realise what's happened is laborious.

I only ever recall having seen a couple of remarks concerning typos and would personally prefer NOT to allow posts to be edited, particularly after replies have been posted.
