Hi All,
After spending all morning on this when I clearly should be working, I am passing the challenge over to you lot…
My Kodak 5300 all-in-one printer (printer/photo printer/copier/scanner) has been going wrong for some time now with problems with the ink cartridges. This has got me thinking about buying a new all-in-one printer and I have been searching the net this morning to try and find one with all of the features I would like. These are:
Must Haves
Printer, copier and scanner
Colour printing as well as black/white
Wireless networkable
Ability to scan 35mm negatives and/or slides
Borderless printing
Print onto a wide range of materials – iron-on transfers, transparencies, etc.
Ink life and costs must be reasonable
Duplex capabilities
Ability to print directly onto CD/DVD media
Extras that would be nice
Ability to take USB flash drives as well as SD cards
CD/DVD burner included in all-in-one to save doing it on the PC
Up to and including A3 sized printing
Size – nothing massive as it needs to stand under a desk
Now, does anyone have a printer that does all or most things on my ‘Must Haves’ list that they can recommend?
I am not too bothered about makes and models. I’ve had printers in most makes in my time and no one of them stands out as miles better than the rest. I’m more concerned about the specifications than the brand name.
I have found the Canon PIXMA MP970 does most of the things on my list, although I’m not sure about it’s network capabilities. It’s expensive but I am willing to pay a slightly higher price than I paid for the Kodak 5300 if it will last a long time and has the features I require.
All suggestions gratefully received!
Regards,
Bo Peep. _________________ TomTom 730

I couldn't help you as I prefer an independant colour laser rather than one of those multi function 'things', but it was good to see all the other over-whelming advice you had. _________________ TomTom Go 60

I was going to chip in but your features list threw me! I too recently had to replace my multi-function printer. In the end I plumped for a B+W Laser and a separate printer/scanner/copier. I went for Brother because they always have good Mac support and the MFP had built-in wireless.
Some of the cheaper colour printer/scanners are scarily cheap, my local Rymans has a basic model with flatbed scanner for £29.99, why bother replacing the ink, just replace the unit! _________________ Darren Griffin

It’s actually worse, as Bo Peep and I had another printer fail!
My old, faithful, networked HP LaserJet 4 died a couple of days ago with a "50 Service" error message, which means a problem with the fuser unit. This makes it BER (beyond economic repair). So we’ve currently lost our networked laser printer.

Couldn’t agree with you more there GJF, so using the advice from the saying that there are no problems just opportunities, I used the failure of the HP LaserJet 4 as an excuse to buy a newer model.
I’ve settled for ordering an HP LaserJet 2605dn printer, which is a colour laser that’s much quicker than the old printer (both mono and colour), it’s a duplex machine, and it’s easily networked so I don’t have to use the Jet Direct print server box. Trouble is that each toner (and there are four) is horrendously expensive, especially as I’m going to keep using the HP branded toners.

I use an HP laserJet for black and white, Epson D92 for colour including Photos in A5 & A4, Epson Picture Mate for 6x4 which also has a card reader.
For scanning Slides and negatives I use an Epson 4490 Photo scanner. _________________ Graham.

Regards,
I have a Minolta colour laser, the black toner is aprox £60 and the colour (Cyan, Magenta and yellow) cartridge's are £106 each, but they do last for aprox 6,000 pages depending on the colour content.
The colour definition is outstanding speed is reasonable and the colours don't run when the page gets wet. _________________ TomTom Go 60
