I suffer from vertigo, I fly light aircraft, I parachute and I'm fine but ask me to go near the edge of a drop over 20ft and my legs turn to jelly go figure!
Looking at this video has made me feel very sick!

I've no fear of heights but I wouldn't trust the 100+ year old walkway to take my weight.
Quote: | Originally built in 1901, this walkway now serves as an aproach to makinodromo, the famous climbing sector of El Chorro. |
I guess only climbers are mad enough to walk the route. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Although not recently, i have flown light aircraft and gliders, used to parachute and sky dive.
Years ago, before Health & Safety was invented i used to 'shin' up and down scaffolds 20/30 floors up, (although i was younger) without ladders, so i would love to have a go at this.
Is this the prize in the next competition?
If so i'm in, this would be too much for that DennisN, so at least he wouldn't enter.
I must admit the gaps look a bit daunting, but as with all heights, if you move around relaxing at your own pace for a while first, it's surprising how you get used to it and become adventuress.
I think i would be more cautious with trusting that 'secure' line on the wall, although that must be recent, it must be perishing with the weather.
You must admire the original 'builders', what a feat, they must of hung from the sides to build it, as for getting the materials there and put them in place must be mind boggling - and this was before 1901. _________________ TomTom Go 60

I know he did, 'cos I was at the top holding the rope for him. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

We all knew you were both old!
But that old, now we know.
So that's you out of the competition to win the trip as well then. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Whoever it was that filmed that must have a death wish or something as not once did he clip the safety line. But looking down at his feet on the bare metal sections was killing me. _________________ Dom

Curious - I've happily done a few charity abseils from over 200ft without difficulty, but get me more than a few feet up a ladder and I'm useless _________________ Andy

I'm sure a psychiatrist could explain it! I can hang out of an aircraft and jump out without any fear, I've flown in gliders etc and no problems with height whatsoever.
But when I had to hire a long ladder to clear my gutters last winter my legs were like jelly by the time I was half way up! And when we were in Taipei last year we visited Taipei 101, the worlds tallest building at the time. I'm told the view from the 101st floor is awesome, I couldn't get close enough to the windows to look! _________________ Darren Griffin |

I stopped the video at 1min 30secs, couldn't go any further. I dread to think what else follows.
I did NOT help build it - Lost Property is lying about me and rope.
I got sick looking UP at the Eiffel Tower from the ground below.
I have a patch of upstairs window frame which Vera's son in law missed when painting and I can't get to it.
I have barge boards at the guttering which need re-painting - by somebody else!!
I have walked across I.K. Brunel's famous Clifton Suspension Bridge once (twice actually, there and back) - out of extreme obligation when my father set his wheelchair that way, I walked facing inwards and clinging to the inner railing every inch of it. I drove over it once by mistake and nearly crashed out of sheer shock. A couple of weeks ago my TomTom aimed me that way and I diverted quite a long way round to avoid it.
I'm much better these days, but there was a time when I couldn't look out of my upstairs bedroom windows.
I get dangerously close to being too P......d to be accepted onto flights to Corfu.
EDIT My first job interview in civvy street was for the civil service in the co-op building in Manchester. Turned out to be on the thirteenth floor and I walked all the way up and back down, bare bones concrete internal fire escape, because I couldn't even contemplate the lift.

Before Health & Safety in the early 1970's, I used to walk the girders (aprox 2ft wide) without safety lines or harness at the top of a power station being constructed.
I must confess that i couldn't stand up in my first week up there, but after that you would be surprised how reckless you can get with confidence.
Also try going to the top of a Power Station chimney, all tall objects have movement in there design or they would fall down, but on a tall slim object however, even if you are used to it you can feel the 'sway' and it can make you feel sick.
Also done pot-holing and got stuck in a narrow bend with water in it.
I am certainly not tough, slightly nuts may be. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Interesting thread...
I've been up to the top of the Eiffel Tower... no problem.
Walked across high bridges as a child that neither of my parents would cross... no problem.
And yet that famous poster of the workmen sitting on the arm of a crane or something while eating their lunch (see here ) makes me feel queasy every time I look at it!
But it's like the car crash syndrome. I know it makes me feel dodgy but I still have to keep looking at it!
Regards,
Bo Peep. _________________ TomTom 730

This is not for me!
I've done quite a bit of ridge walking - but this is (literally) a step too much for me
Great video though! _________________ Phil |

Height is all relative of course.
E.G. If you are say 6 feet tall and looking up at a 12 foot ledge, the ledge is just 6 feet away.
Stand on the ledge and look down and the ground is 18 feet below.
If you think about it, the walk in the film is actually 12 feet lower than it appears when you are up there. So what's the problem?
(I sat my wife, who is scared of heights, in front of the screen for her to watch the film. I had to laugh when I saw her 'leaning' away from the edge.) _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property
