The camera window is also open in 'on duty' mode.

Not sure what you're looking at, but in the photo on pistonheads.com there's definitely no camera in the window! You can clearly see all the way out through the front window and van mount speed cameras are BIG.

Edit: Don't forget it's the DOOR that has to be open for a camera to work - not the window. There is no type of speed camera that can function through glass (not even laser).

I didn't say I could see the camera, I said the window was open. Even in the photo on Derbyshire Safety Camera Partnership's website you can't see the camera and that photo is taken from a much closer position to the rear of the van.

Looking at the image on Pistonheads.com where can you see right through to the front window, that's mirrored film on the glass with the bottom sliding section open:

Anyway, as the story has now been confirmed as true the argument is pointless!

Hi,
It seems that we now have Derbyshires builders van, and North Wales Polices' horsebox to watch out for. Has anyone seen any other covert cameras?
Question

According to the paper, there was one in the women's showers at my local leisure centre. Not sure that was installed by the police though. Smile

Would that be the same website that also says, "The vehicles all bear the 'Safety Camera Team' livery"? Looks like someone is lying.

Question The laser, tripod mounted in the rear of the van operates 'through' the open section of the window as can be seen in the cut-out on this image:

Quote:
The cameras, which are usually operated through the rear windows of the vans, use a laser device to measure the speed of vehicles coming towards or travelling away from the camera

I spotted a white van today, parked up off the road on a verge. The van had the back doors open and an orange light bar on the top. Yes, it was a speed camera van, despite being marked up as a police van it wasn't wearing its blue lights Evil or Very Mad

Yes, I've reported its location to the database.

I'm doing interviews for the BBC tomorrow, it's stirring up quite some interest unsurprisingly!
