'morning all,

I'm finally allowed to play with my TT920 today (birthday pressie), have fired it up to see that it's running version 710 maps. Should I upgrade to the 715 now of hang fire until the new 930 style maps are released? The card in the box specifcally says that you have 30 from when you start using it, I'm doing a windows backup now, have not connected it to home?

Look forward to any comments, so long as they are not related to age!

TomTom ask for proof of purchase if you cannot upgrade using Home. Many people find that they cannot upgrade from 710 to 715 with Home. I suspect that the proof of purchase date will be the critical factor if you have to challenge TomTom later.

I would suggest waiting until day 28 and see what the latest maps are then.

If Navcore 8 and v8 maps are released by then you might be lucky and able to update, if they aren't you haven't really missed out on much.

Before you do any updates to your new device, take a backup using Windows Explorer for a rollback should things go horribly wrong using Home.

It would not surprise me if you only got offered the latest v7 maps through latest map guarantee, as the v8 maps will incorporate extra functionality such as IQ routing and Lane Assist (or whateve it is called).

Recently purchased a 920T and had to pester TT until they upgraded the maps. Didn't have the option to do this straight away through HOME.

They wanted proof of purchase receipt. Not a problem. They then asked for the serial number of the device - so why not ask for that at the same time?
They then gave me access to the v715 for W & C Europe map.
Had to badger them again and they then added the NA map.

Note - v710 of Guam IS the latest version anyway.

Seems like this rigmarole is pretty standard practice.

Curiously though - I have just 'upgraded ' the maps on a TT One v3 which we had lying around at work unused. I downloaded v715 for this straight from HOME and did not have to contact TT. It had been in the drawer for around 3 months but never connected to HOME.

Good point - I will have to pester them to upgrade the NA map as it didn't do it automatically through HOME - not that I am likely to use it but hey, I am entitled to it.

I am unlikely to use it either however it became a 'principle'

The other gripe was that I kept bleating on about upgrading the Guam map - even less likely to go there much to the amusement of other members - and only at the very last knocking did they condescend to tell me that v710 WAS the latest map. Doh!!"!

I know this makes me sound like Victor Meldrew but if I decide to sell it I am sure that any buyer would want the latest maps possible. etc.

Welcome to the Victor Meldrew club!

I am one of the founder members, especially as far as RDS-TMC is concerned Laughing

Well I am new to TMC but on the ONE occasion we have used it it was actually quite impressive. In addition to the ongoing contraflow on the M1 it gave me 3 incidents from Surrey to Loughborough and all 3 were pretty damn spot on.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Wink

Thanks for the comments gents.

This was actually purchased 28/3 as dixons were knocking them out for £245, so only a week left if they do want to see the receipts. Think I'll go for the 715 maps now as I got it so cheap I'm not really that out of pocket if the new maps are there in the month or so.

Cheers,

Matt.

Contrast that with my experience with Microsoft yesterday.

My son's Xbox360 has died (with the dreaded "red ring of death").

Apparently, it took them a while to admit there was a major design problem, OK fair enough, but now they have extended the warranty to 3 or maybe 4 years, they have offered to reimburse people who had already paid for repairs, AND when you register for a repair, it simply asks for the serial number, and THAT'S IT, no faffing about with faxing till receipts to them etc.

TomTom, take note...

Well, i have a different scenario:

my 920 was a replacement unit (720 died and got this a an apology!)
that was back at end of jan 08.

since then i had been trying thru home to update (i was on V710) and home kept saying i was upto date.

i then found out recently (thanks to this forum!) that in fact V715 were the latest versions, yet home still said i was upto date.

I contacted Customer services direct by phone and explained the scenario gave them the date of purchase and the date of first use, the guy put me on hold for 10mins whilst he checked when 715 was first available, then hey presto back he came and said i was entitled to the upgrade FOC for all maps and they were duly available (24hrs later) thru TThome.

I had to email them my receipt which is fair enough as otherwise anyone could ring up with a story!

so from my view, well done tom tom.

and a point to note for the rest of you,

If you purchased your TT after 28/01/08 you are entitled to free upgrade.

now comes the fun of downloading em to TT920 as it reports not enough space for the upgrade!!

Yes, you'll need an SD card to fit them all onto.
Be careful how you start up "Home" so it is saving to the correct location, especially if you want to split them and put say Europe on the internal memory and the US on the card. If both storage locations are available, it should be on the first screen when Home starts up.
