Talex lite - Using the PocketGPSWorld database

yes, the hardware is generic Korean? and several people use the same unit with minor cosmetic changes to distinguish them. The voice chip is seperate and according to the datasheet you may be able to record your own messages. So again bulk buyers can program a difference to the competition. It looks as if nothing is built from scratch in this country anymore and the skill involved is having a good database and the software expertise to program it Smile

jamesjrl was kind enough to send me a copy of the indic8tor firmware. After having a quick look at it, it seems the database format is completely different to the talex/novus. It also seems to be a lot smaller. It's quite possible they simply added a better 'encryption' scheme than the talex, but either way I can't see any regular pattern in the data. The firmware would have to be decompiled in order to understand it.

However, the fact that it runs talex firmware shows that the hardware must be very similar. With effort, the voice chip could be desoldered, a programming circuit designed and new voices added, but considering the time and effort that would need to be invested, you'd probably be better off just buying a talex instead :p

Since the indic8tor can run the talex firmware (albeit with sound issues) then you could install the talex/novus firmware and then install the PGPSW database once I have it finished. Everything is in place to start converting the database, I just need a copy of it Razz

I'm going back to university tomorrow and have tests on Friday, so it will take a while before I can finish off this project. But having invested so much time it (easily 50 plus hours), I'm not going to be giving up any time soon Wink

Ah - just noticed I've been given access to download the database now... thanks very much guys Smile

I'll set it converting night. I've already got all my local points processed and I'm going to put them onto my talex now and give it a go tonight. Hopefully it'll work Smile

Yes, must add a well done also, impressive work and i think this method of pre processing camera locations could turn out to be far more useful than originally planned. To increase accuracy on other devices also (eg, tomtom etc).

The database has finished converting and I've got a test version ready - just need to talk with MaFt about releasing it.

silentwol has got the first stage working in as much as the Talex is reporting the location of all PGPSW camera types on the Talex.

Currently the investigations are around :

Once that is OK the next stage will likely be:

Produce the various 'bongs' when approaching and under the limit and also once the camera is passed.

I suspect there is quite a bit of work to do
