Admin Note: This post has been split from a separate thread, this explains the loss of continuity in the opening post here!

The other possibility is that you could change the Forum Rank of lifers to "Lifetime Member" or something to re-enforce the fact that real people can and do get free membership.

An excellent idea. Please do it!

About the only thing I dislike about this site is the arbitrary Forum Ranks - 'Experienced, Advanced, Fanatic.'
How did someone decide that Advanced meant more posts than Experienced?
I nearly stopped posting at 599 to stop being labelled a Fanatic which IMO is almost an insult.

Those forum ranks were the defaults created when we inaugurated the forum five years ago, we're open to sensible suggestions for alternatives?

How many are there? Can there be fewer categories? If so how about just:

Beginner
Intermediate
Experienced OR Advanced

The big "maybe", of course, is that all this assumes that the more you post the more you know! Laughing

For standard ranks there are five and these can be added to or removed. Of course there is another case for no rank at all (excepting custom ranks such as Mod, verifier etc). The post count can then speak for itself?

If the software permits it I would have just three categories for 'non-staff':

visitor
subscriber
life member

As you say the post count speaks for itself.

We have chosen not to identify subscribers for commercial reasons, similarly lifetime members may or may not wish to be identified and so that is not something we would wish to handle via forum ranks.

Then Andy's suggestion would be a great improvement over the present situation.

Ok, we now have three levels as per Andy's Suggestion. I'm tinkering with a three level graphic which i might add later on Very Happy

Thank you Darren.

Good job I read this thread before reporting that the ranking graphics had disappeared and that I appeared to be demoted from Experienced to Advanced. Smile

I agree with others about the number of levels. Personally, as long as beginners have that extra warning below their name (for their own protection usually), the rest of the standard ranks are pretty much redundant.

Ah yes, sorry, I ought to do something about that before we get loads of complaints.

That's the drawback of instant action of course!

Agreed. I think the three ranking levels we now have with the graphics omitted is better, I was playing with the graphics but as the text is compulsory if you have a graphic or not it seemed rather superfluous.

As this is where it was discussed and not the sticky I'll put my last point here.

I would say that having the extra icons under the Staff and Moderators would be an idea to make them stand out (as the officials on the board) - just use the ones you have.

I've hived the discussion off to a separate thread here as it was OT in relation to the original topic somewhat!

You make a valid point and so I have now re-added the graphics for Team, Moderator and Verifier Groups in response to your suggestion.

And now I shall go and have a glass of wine Wink
