Thinking about a Nokia phone to run Navigator. I've run it previously on an iPaq & on an XDA IIs/Orange equivalent & found things like lost bluetooth pairings & returning to Navigator after a phone call a PITA.

Have things got any better in the last couple of years I've been using a PND & how much of an issue is the lack of touch screen on a Symbian device?

I am running Igo and Tomtom on my Ipaq 4700. Just arrived my first symbian phone (Nokia 6120) on which I plan to install Tomtom but my intention is to have it just as an alternative for when I go around walking...

I also wonder how it will be navigation without the touch screen, it will certainly be difficult while driving plus the screen size and the battery life are things to consider. I will get back to you with some feedback after the weekend.

TomTom is not ideal for walking as it tends to 'snap' to the nearest road. Better go for MemoryMap.

As regards Windows Mobile, I've been using it for several years and I find it pretty stable nowdays. Haven't had a lost bluetooth pairing for some time and the latest WM6 devices are much improved.
Can't say I've been impressed by Symbian devices. I used to be a real fan but the last Nokia I had was cr*p and has put me off Symbian for good. But maybe they have moved on too?

On or off road? TT will be fine around town, but as reteb says, you'd need something else for off road.

As I said my Nokia 6120 (Symbian) arrived last week, The interface looks basic and simple and makes me miss a bit my old SE W810i... but that is not the point...

The 6120 feels fast and stable, installing Tomtom was easy and it found my BT GPS in no time, the voice directions are clear and is quite easy to navigate through the menus using the numerical pad... you will only need to spend some time getting used to it but I have to say Tomtom has done a good job.

Now I have both the WM6 PPC and the Symbian phone... and for driving I feel like the touch screen is irreplaceble and will help you keep your focus on the road. I am happy with how the tomtom is working in my phone, but this particular nokia will not be replacing the PPC, the Symbian device will be kept as a back up tool for when I am walking or for when I go abroad on Holidays.

I find my PPC a great tool , I have used Igo on it and also Tomtom now looking forward to the release of the new 3D Igo 8. There is no doubt that the PPC will give you a lot of flexibility. Tmobile offers a MDA Compact III which I believe has inbuilt GPS, and can be a nice toy.

BGF: Thanks for the recommendation, I haven't actually tried tomtom walking routes yet - I will be using it in town, maybe to find a nice PUB somewhere... it too cold to go for birdwatching or things like that!

It is a very capable device, but T-Mobile UK crippled the device by removal of the WiFi hardware, usng it on Web-n-Walk is acceptable but if WiFi is a major need look at the XDA-Orbit from O2, its the same device with WiFi enabled, or wait a few weeks for the XDA Orbit 2 (aka HTC Touch Cruise, otherwise known as Polaris) this is a far better device in terms of specification - Mike

Nokia are intending to launch a version of the Symbian S60 platform which has touch-screen capability, (http://www.s60.com/business/newsevents/pressreleases/?action=archiveNews&pbId=&newsId=386&c_id=10&yid=2007&mid=10) though when the devices become available is down to the individual manufacturer. Also of course the Sony-Ericsson Symbian phones (the P800/P900 etc.) based on the UIQ platform have touch-sensitive screens.

You do get rather used to just being able to tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the menu etc, so I guess moving to a menu-based system would take some getting used to.

There's a lot of impressive-looking software around for the various Symbian phones, the platform (and in particular the user interface) does seem to have improved significantly since the old Nokia 3650 was current.

Thanks all.

Can't justify the cost of a brand new phone so will maybe look out for a used Orbit & give that a try.

As the Orbit II is just starting to hit the O2 high street shops there might be some original Orbit devices being off loaded soon, Orbit II is a much better device (on paper as I haven't tried one yet), but the original Orbit / Artemis is still a very capable device by today’s standards - The Artemis is the first phone I have actually felt at home with, it simply does what I need in a reliable way - Mike
