SDHC types and normal SD cards are compatable with the x20 devices, some of us are running 8GB SDHC cards in our 720 units, the trick with the SDHC is to make sure your card reader can actually work correctly with this type of card, as it appears to be the card reader that is the issue when you go above 4GB. - Mike

On mine, I have about three different map versions, old and new, just cos' I'm curious.

Other people put loads of mp3 music on (I'm talking dozens of albums - that itty bitty SD card is a fair bit smaller than a bagful of CDs), some have managed to get videos on them, others like Mike above have all sorts of esoteric stuff to use alongside what the rest of us mere mortals use - the latest TTs will play music, videos (with some add-on software) show text and don't they also do ebooks or something? Mike uses his also to predict the winning Lottery numbers, check the time in the Kalahari desert, as a slide rule, divining rod, lifejacket, parachute and backup jet engine (and occasionally lends it to his wife when the microwave is full).

You don't need any of these SD cards if all you need to do is use your TT device out of the box. It's mostly Smartypants Southerner Softypantses who get into all the extras stuff (except Mike and he's from Blackpool - need I say more?). I have an SD card extra on one of my devices only. The other two are as they came out of the box - and I get by.

When I am not using the memory card to cook tea (thanks for that DennisN) it tends to be full of music, seriously though when you have been used to a 910 with its 20GB hard drive the x20 devices are somewhat limitted in music capacity. I needed 8GB to hold what I had on the 910 - Mike

Well TomTom just replied telling me that I shoudl not run more than a 2GB SD in my 520T and that i need a read speed of 10MB.

However, I can not find what thay speed translates to. is it 66x? So do I need like a Scan Disk Extreme III or will a Play.com 2GB SD at 66x for 7.50 GBP be good enough?

Only 50% of the advice offered by TT was correct, (still they apear to be getting better) the read speed is important, the fact that a number of us are using SDHC cards with capacity of 4GB and 8GB is a good indication they work with the x20 range of units. - Mike

TT's own website now has a chart which states you can use SDHC cards in the x20 models... and as I don't think anyone MAKES those smaller than 4GB, it kind of implies its OK!

As for speed, that's at the bottom of that chart too.
Quote:
Some manufacturers express the speed in x 150 bytes/sec
Example: “50 X” is equivalent to 7.5 MB/sec

...although they don't go on to actually suggest a speed! Rolling Eyes

(P.S. LOVE the "getting better" remark, Mike! Very Happy )

OUCH - I can assure you my taste in music can go quite low at times, but it never gets to the basement Laughing

The Chart over at TomTom about SDHC cards is great BUT it mentions nothing about the speed rating applicable to SDHC cards, they use a classification called Class X (where X is a number) - the higher the better, my Class 6 SDHC 8GB card by Peak is great, the SanDisk Micro SDHC which is 4GB and fitted to one of my phones also works in the 720 (when fitted in the supplied addaptor) but no speed of class of card is printed on it - Mike
