Does anyone know how much the custom 1:25K explorer maps will cost?

Is it possible to transfer maps between SD Cards? For example, I have SouthGB on an SD card... would I be able to put a custom 1:25K map on the same card and have the Active10 switch automatically between them when I zoom in/out?

What's the largest SD card the Active10 will accept? Does it take SDHC or just standard SD (which would make the limit 2Gb)?

I see that custom 1:25k maps are now available on the SatMap website:
http://www.satmap.com/ukstore/index.php?cPath=80&sort=2a

Does anyone know of a good tool to use to find out what area would be covered by a section of map a certain size centered on a particular point? i.e. if I make a list of all the places I am likely to visit, then what is the smallest custom 1:25k map I must purchase in order to be sure that all the places I want are on there? Where should the map be centered?

It looks like there will be an on line planner for this at some future point:

Do you have any electronic mapping on your PC? if not it should be possible to do this check using Google Earth, although not too easy - measure a line you have drawn in the software - Mike

I've used the custom mapping area on the Tracklogs web-site for this... you can vary the centre of the map and the dimensions in 10km units...

Cheers for that rog62, that is a neat way to check the area and get the center point, it also makes an interesting comparison of cost Wink - Mike

I have just asked about a map centre for a certain point in the Brecon Beacons. The chepest map availablle is £55 plus £6 delivery (30K x 30K area).

This I think is steep as Track logs will charge £36 for a 30K x 30K (900sKM) map and they do not charge delivery. Correct me if I am wrong and explain the benefits of this form of mapping, but are we being ripped off here?

It would be good to access a library of existing maps.... Ramblers do something along these lines...drop them a line and you can rent any OS map that they have for a nominal amount. (Would anybody be prepared to loan/rent me the Lakes, or I could exchange the New Forest/South Downs Way ?)

As an aside...just why are the maps so expensive ? What proportion is taken by OS as a licence fee....if that is the issue ?

Given the similarity in prices between all the mapping software people like MM and Anquet I would say it's a very large proportion....90%+?
