Apologies if this question has been asked before but a search of the forum hasn't thrown up an answer.

I currently use a Talex Lite Safety Camera detector and particularly like the voice warnings when approaching a camera. It lets me know the type of camera and local speed limit without having to take my eyes off the road.

It seems that the default option on the Garmin Nuvi is a beeped warning. Is there a simple way to customise the PGPSW POI database to give detailed voiced warnings? If not, is there another work around?

Thank you,

John

Absolutely Exclamation

Take a look at ASH10's Camera manager (towards top of this forum). It allows you to add in voices and customise distance/time to warnings. Well worth a little donation to get all the features - but try the 'free' version to see if it is going to do what you want.

There are pointers to some .mp3 voice files around here somewhere - try searching for them.

You can grab a set of the spoken alert files from This Page, then convert them from ogg format to mp3 using the free audio editor package Audacity - open the ogg file with Audacity and choose the File/ Export as mp3 command, to put the resultant files on the device follow Phils instructions above - Mike

Thanks for your help. I'm now well on my way to getting the Nuvi 250w o work as I want it. Camera Manager looks great but one thing I've not yet sorted is how to use the MP3 voice files I've created. There's nothing that I can see in Camera Manager to help with this though I suspect the key is selecting the correct destination for Audacity to export the MP3 files to. Should it be the same folder that POI Loader is pointed to?

Any advice please?

Thank you,

John

I seem to recall that the Nuvi 2xx series will not support an MP3 file Crying or Very sad

You're quite right.

However Ash10's Voice Utility might save the day... Exclamation

I keep meaning to try it (for my C510); if you find the .WAV's that correspond to the Proximity and Speed Alert sounds (the long pitched 'BONG' and the high pitched 'PING') and replace them with something more descriptive...that wouldn't be too bad...

Obviously the same sound will get applied to each alert (of the same type)

Phil,
Thanks for the tip but where would I look for the .wav files? And if/when I find them could I just use Audacity to convert .ogg files to .wav format and insert them?
Any advice much appreciated.

You'll have to read your way through the thread I referenced, but the program is quite simple in operation. Basically it takes one of Garmin' .VPM files and splits it up into its constituent .WAV's (the first one is not a really .WAV; it's some sort of File header - leave that one alone).

You then edit/subsitute the .WAV of your choice and re-constitute the .VPM file. Obviously, for this operation you just need to find the tones, not the spoken words. A little experimentation is called for!

I'm not familiar with Audacity.

Ash10's Voice Utility works a dream. There are 110 separate .wav files to work through which I've narrowed down to seven which seem to be audible warnings.

The initial warning will be difficult, if not impossible to reconstitute, as a voice because I want it to carry variable info eg speed limit and (ideally) camera type whereas the Garmin system seems to just use a single 'bong' or 'beep' with speed info etc carried in text. While I'm thinking about this does anyone have any ideas?

Yes - I think there's only two .WAV's involved here. Garmin's GPI_Viewer utility describes Proximity Alerts as being assigned "Passive Tone" and Speed Alerts "Aggressive Tone". The first is the low pitched BONG,BONG (it probably plays one .wav, twice) and the other is a higher pitched, but longer "Ping" (repeated at a slower rate).

My plan was to switch the higher pitched "Ping" into a wav that says "Watch your Speed!" and the lower pitched one to say "Proximity alert". It's probably a good idea to have some sort of tone as well (like a Railway Station announcement).

Report back with your findings - I've been meaning to do this for my C510 for ages Smile

Stehanson Ash's camera manager does allow for .mp3 voice files which should work on the 660.

All you do is make sure you have an mp3 voice file named exactly as the .bmp and data files and poiloader will download the voice files at the same time

Idea

As there is no specific option for this for a user to select I assume its done automatically?? - wont this overwrite the original bong noise which ive seen in another thread should be backed up before you start playing around with the voice files?!
Is there any other way of doing it as I am quite happy with the PGPSW alert distances which will be altered by Ash`s camera manager software - or can they be left as they are written in the download file using the piece of SW - any help appreciated,

Cheers Ste
