When you take your next backup, save it to another folder. Ideally keep two or at most three recent backups and delete the older ones as time progresses.

To re-install from a backup should the worst case scenario happen, simply copy all the files from your recent backup and overwrite those on your device using Explorer.

MapShare is free anyway and the speed cameras are honestly not worth bothering with!

I'm sure it must have been flagged to you already, but instructions on how to make a full backup with Windows Explorer are to be found HERE but it's the first time I've noticed, it doesn't explicitly say how to put that backup back on your machine....

Suffice to say... you just dothe same process in reverse. COPY ALL the contents from your chosen backup folder and PASTE them onto the TomTom. If Windows asks you whether you want to "overwrite files with the same name", say "Yes to all".

EDIT - Whoops, didn't see your reply Mike....

Mike.. For completeness, do you think it would be worth just adding a couple of lines to your FAQ, about restoring the backup?

Updates like this shouldn't normally cause ANY problems, so we need to find out what's going wrong at your end.

For starters, do you ALWAYS use the "safely remove hardware" icon in the PC's taskbar (next to the clock), before you unplug the TomTom?
Windows often LOOKS like it has finished writing to a device before it actually has. Simply unplugging the TT without being told it has finished is likely to corrupt files.

You USE it by clicking on it every time before you unplug.
It will ask which removable drive you want to disconnect, and if it is still busy it will tell you to wait.

To be honest Andy i have never used the icon to do that, i have 4 mins left for the backup to finish, do you left or right click the 'safely remove hardware' icon?? It was a simple update that took 40 seconds, it has now took over an hour to put all the files back on the tom tom Crying or Very sad

It's nothing to do with TomTom, its the way Windows works for ANY removable drive (like USB memory sticks too).

If it really has finished writing to it, then it should be OK to unplug, but it's the equivalent of pulling the plug out of your PC rather than shutting it down properly.

You LEFT click on it, for the quick remove (then left click on the message saying "Safely remove USB mass storage device (+ drive letter (or 2 letters for models with both SD card and internal memory))". If you right click, you get a bigger pop-up window, but can do the same thing.

Thanks Andy, the backup is complete now. What do you think is causing me not to download any updates?? It was only a 40 sec speed camera update as well. Wink

Sorry, didn't know you weren't getting updates....
You said "I have just installed updates to my tomtom speed cameras uk and yes i have just got the red cross of death.". That sounds like you did get the update but it got corrupted when you unplugged.

If that's not the case, what happens when you try to update now?
Say exactly what you click on to do it and what happens next.

There is also a Disconnect Device Option under Device on the HOME Menu Bar.
