The hardware does not get the MAC address from the wireless network (router) as you indicated in your first post.

I beg to differ, but I don't wish to start an argument - that should be whole purpose of the wireless adapter having its own MAC address, because this is used for wireless connection, for a cabled connection, the ethernet ID would be required

My appologies, I misread your first post Embarassed My original, incorrect, interpretation was that you were expecting the MAC to be obtained from the ROUTER rather than the wireless adapte in the XBox. Again, my appologies for the misread and subsequent comments Embarassed

Sorry you are right of course.

I'm used to dealing with Home users where they have their first network and getting them used to using SSIDs and Network Key can be a torturous process. I try to leave them with enough knowledge so they can add new PCs to their network or re-connect a dropped connection with the minimum of fuss, and without having to pay for an engineer to come out and do it for them.

I'm not saying that I'm always right - I'm just never wrong Rolling Eyes

I knew that it was probably because of they way I'd written something so that it hadn't been interpreted in the way it was meant.

I'm glad that we've got it sorted and that we're all friends again

Whilst on the subject, and having in attendance 'real' WiFi experts. I use MAC filtering and WPA-PSK with a longish key.
I have found that if I do not transmit my SSID my laptop seems to refuse to find my network. oops. I have just tried it and it found it connected OK (this time). More thinking leads me to wonder whether it's the 'Network Discovery' on my laptop (Vista Home Premium) which I exclusively hibernate rather than switch off. I have at present got 'Network Discovery' switched ON. Must this be switched on for my network to work? I thought that it was to do with Bluetooth, not 'normal' wireless. Which only goes to demonstrate how much I realy (don't) know about it. Crying or Very sad

Do you have modem, ethernet, wireless networking all enabled?

I think hibernation could be the key, because when a computer wakes up it looks to see what port to use for a connection and I've found that if modem is active, this can interfere with ethernet or wireless networking connecting after being woken up because the computer historically uses this port as a preference

I'm not sure how to do it on a PC, but on a Mac you can just deselect the modem in network system preferences

I've never had a problem with modem deselected, but I've had problems connecting to ethernet and wireless networks if modem is still active

Let me know if this works

I suspect that it's me being impatient. I have disabled transmission of my SSID at my router, and my laptop connects OK within a few seconds of it firing up from hibernation. If however I switch it (the laptop) off, it takes an age to sort out the network connection. The laptop has both ethernet and modem connections, but I exclusively use the wireless connection.
I have just disabled the ethernet adapter, so will try again in the near future.
My main 'concern' was that I wanted to switch OFF SSID, and have found that I can now do so and all is OK. I suspect that my problem was didgit related when I first had my laptop and wireless router.
Thanks fo the help.

Networking can be a bit of a minefield.

I have just bought a new sony laptop that has issues with my Wireless router. Unlike all my other wireless devices it seem that every time I turn it on it won't connect. However as I am also impatient I just go into my wireless settings and just wait a moment for the search refresh to find all the local networks including mine and I just connect to it. My SSID is hidden, I have access controls, and it connects exacly as it did before. If you set up your network once it will remember it for next time.

I thought my problems were because my sony runs on Vista, but as I can work around it, it's not a problem. Cool

Hi Dom
Tks for the info. Your Sony sounds a bit like mine. (Philips). As I said above, I now don't seem to have a prob with connecting, it's almost instant from hibernation. (I leave my modem/router on all the time) I havn't tried it from a switch off recently, but I think I will give it a tryout later this aftrenoon, when I'm not chatting away here. I'll have a look at the connection thingy first though, so that I can find it after a switch on to see what's happpening. My laptop is running Vista Home Premium and my other two comps on my network are running XPSP2 and I have a reecom NAS tagged onto the network as well.
