For all those Naive people who say its paid out of your taxes

and as has already been pointed out -"do you expect your OS maps to be free?)"

What do you think the OS does with the money it gets from the private companies it sells data to, what does it do with the money it gets from sales of maps & software?

Simple - the fiscal budgets from the Govt for most government institutions only cover some of the expenditure the rest comes from commercial operations and this would be no more than another commercial operation to balance the budget.

Its the duty of every public body to get finance from alternative sources to reduce the burden on the tax payer. How do you think the BBC makes such good programs, not from the small license fee but mostly from the sale of those programs to other countries & broadcasters

And yes I have been a British Tax Payer for 26 years (still am even over here !!!) And I'm still believe 10 pounds is worth it to ensure quality.

Iwould be happy to pay. I don't see why they shouldn't offer all of the charging models - we don't need a one size fits all. Indeed I would imagine there would be folk out there who would be happy to pay £50 for a lifetime membership. Set it up a let it run for the first year, after which adjust the charging model depending on demand or whatever. If they say the lifetime membership price is about to increase to say £250 next month, they would probably get a lot more £50s.

I think the poll should be altered.

It ought to have a section called "it's already our data, we've already paid for it" and If the poll doesn't have that option then, in my opinion, it's a sham poll which won't serve any useful purpose for the end user.

Welcome to the Forum

Interesting viewpoint Confused But, that's what this forum is all about - to give you the opportunity to express your opinion. And, I think it will be read by the OS staff with interest. But, already there have been some interesting points and I tend to go with the views that say the the OS is not funded to make these POIs available to the public without cost and, I repeat my
point, that you would not expect to be able to get OS mapping free of cost - or would you?
All taxpayers indirectly fund the OS yet, I suspect that only a small percentage of the population actually use the OS products. My contention then is that those who do use it should pay for it. Wink

I voted for free POI. Just because I feel that perhaps the POI e.g. pub or fuel station should make a small contribution to the OS people, mainly to verify that their latitude and longitudes are in the right place. I don't think things like hospitals and NHS clinics should pay but it would be nice to have them on the POI list. My son was treated for cancer again this year and again we had to go to a different treatment centre to try new methods but half the hospitals are not in POI lists 2/3 in Newcastle upon tyne (our main centre, 150miles away!!) 2 years ago the Royal Marsden Surry wasn't in either and its a BIG London Hospital (7.5 hours from us!!) Rolling Eyes This year in Sheffield it was a marvelous help to find a place to eat close to the hospital on the POI list but the selection was limited.

Giving maps away for personal use wouldn't stop the OS selling maps to private companies for redistribution...

First Welcome to the Forum Wink

Which POI list are you referring to? Is it a list that was pre-loaded on your device or a list of POIs that you downloaded from the web?
If you have a look HERE - this site has a vast number of different categories of POIs and if you scroll to 'Health' you will find over 1400 UK hospitals listed - not all the categories are free but this one is.

I'm with the crew that believe POI's should be free.
It's not as though it's classified information we''re talking about something that you can go outside and find yourself, and as people have mentioned, we've already paid for them anyway.

If the OS are going to charge for the POI's, then I'll do things the fun way - jump on my bike with the lads and find these things myself.

It's not as though we're in the playground - you can only play with my toys if I can play with yours!

so maybe one should have to input one's NI number to download free POIs?

There are several million more NI Numbers than there are workers between the age of 16 and 65.

Data generated by and on behalf of the masses ought to be free to those masses but anyone who's been aware of the speed camera database since before day one will recognise just how quickly an excellent altruistic idea can be commercialised, branded and exploited.

A phone with live search will usually find a postcode of a business and almost certainly find any OS categorised POI. Pay and pay again ? Micro$oft has just bought multimap. Ordnance Survey want to resell the data we paid them to collect for us ? ... Meh.

Hi, im afraid i go with the £10 per year group because i think it should be well worth, to be able to get accurate information on certain categories. I would never be able to use a large number of the categories, because being retired means i am only interested in the leisure and camp sites etc. Laughing

At the age of 68, I have to tell you there hasn't been such a government in my lifetime. Nor will there be during the rest of yours.

Surely if we wait someone within OS will lose a disk and it would then
turn up on some web site for sale.

After all the government can't stop losing data..

I would pay between £5 -£10

Sorry dennis but there is one. Mugabe has given everone complete freedom to whatever they like as long as it doesn't affect him, otherwise he'll have you bumped off! Confused

I'm not sure this tax paid OS stacks up, as if OS can get revenue from selling the maps then that is an amount that the govenment would remove from the budget. Therefore in ever increasing amount the folks at OS will have to cover the shortfall from the buget. And as we all know that as bugets go I'm sure OS are at the bottom of the pile.

Everything gets comercialized, so why not pois. I wouldn't be upset to see the odd B&Q poi icon now and then. On screen adverts however then that's a definate NO.

true, very true.

but the administration of it is a HUGE task! i mean, it's a full time job sorting out only 15,000 speed cameras let alone 4million pois. the storage and retrieval systems for that amount of data must be pretty immense; not to mention the 'export' formats for the actual final stuff you see.

the information on how to make perfume is easily available, as are the ingredients. but i bet you wouldn't bat an eyelid at spending 40 quids on a bottle of cat pee for the mrs, would you? it's not the information, it's the act of 'doing' that's the issue here!

however, this thread is digressing somewhat so let's try keep it on track a bit Wink
