Hi everyone

I have had my Tom Tom Go 300 for about 2.5 years. When I first got it, the unit used to switch itself on when I started the engine and off when I switched the engine off. I update the tom tom software regularly(ish) but since doing so, the unit no longer switches itself on and off with the engine the way it used to. I have looked at various setting but am at a loss as to what to do.

Also noticed that the most recent upgrade seems to have had an effect on the speed at which the screen refreshes itself. I often get a couple of screens mixed together for a few seconds. Anyone else notice this?

Thank you for reading and any advice is greatly appreciated.

Phil

TomTom sadly withdrew the option for Auto ON when external power is applied some time ago. Auto OFF is still available though.

I've not had that exact screen refresh problem you describe, but "software bloat" in successive versions does seem to have slowed the responsiveness down a bit.
It's probably more pronounced on the earlier models with their slower processors etc. but even the newest models seem a little less "snappy" than the old ones were.

Thank you for that. How do I make it go off when the engine is switched off?

Under Battery Saving Preferences there is an option to 'switch off when external power is lost'. This will power OFF the GO when you switch off if its powered by an ignition controlled supply.

For the record, the x10 series will switch both ON and OFF, with external power from the windscreen mount.

I understood that had been removed in one of the earlier firmware updates? Was it re-instated?

It was removed in V6 and re-instated in V7.

I use it all the time. Smile

I think it vanished in v6.110 - June 15th 2006 - (a release for the x10 series only) in order to disguise the problems with the dodgy mount causing intermittent disconnection and hence switching off.

Then was "not a feature" of all models running v7 until it reappeared for no apparent reason (just on the x10 models) with v7.162 (8492/071121) - 6th Dec 2007.

I still have no idea why they can't just make auto-on and auto-off a user-option now. That would cover all preferences and issues.

I have a 710, and as far as I know it updates when I log onto TT Home, at least I ask it for the updates and load whatever is there.

When I plug it into the mains charger or the cig lighter in the car it starts up automatically.
Now I'm wondering if it doesn't have the latest software - for the model type that is.
It does have 2007 maps of Europe.
v7.162 is what it says.

Ahhhh, just read some of the posts directly above - peace of mind.
