Hi all,

I'm a bit new to this, so forgive me if I'm not making any sense!

I want to buy a new GPS system of some sort, ideally PDA based. I understand that on some dedicated units such as some of the TomToms and Nuvis, it is possible to connect an aerial to receive TMC information via RDS for free. I know TomTom offer a chargeable service over GPRS but I'm not interested in that.

I have considered the very cheap unit from Maplin (AyToBe) that supports TMC, but can't seem to locate anywhere to buy the aerial for it. Any ideas?

Ideally I would buy an all-in-one phone/PDA such as the HTC TyTN and just add TomTom to it, but if I do that, is there any way to utilise the RDS TMC information? A BlueTooth GPS unit that had built in TMC capability would be awesome!

Any thougts please?

Cheers
James

If TMC is a requirement then I would look at either TomTom and obtain the TMC information via your mobile phone using the GPRS connection, mobile phone signal strength in the UK is low and RDS-TMC doesn't work very well as a direct result. Using TMC with TomTom is possible over GPRS but costs an additional subscription per year.

For free TMC data using GPRS consider Route 66 software either on your PDA or mobile phone, the TMC cost is built into the initial purchase price, now the software supplier has updated the map and given the software full UK postcode support its well worth considering - Mike

MrMez - TomTom doesn't support RDS-TMC on their PDA software, so don't expect it to work, even with the right hardware. As Mike says, other software will work though.

If you really want a PDA Solution, Consider the Glofiish X500 PDA

It has a built in RDS FM Radio with a TMC Facility, it depends on the NAV software to interpret the TMC from the PDAs Radio, I know that TomTom does not work but if you have a dig around you may find suitable solution

Its a good unit Quadband Phone - Wifi - Bluetooth - SirfIII in a VERY compact unit for about £270 so if you can get the internal TMC working it gets rid of the need for any external boxes at all!

I tracked the website to www.geo24.de

The forum link doesn't seem to work.

Maybe someone fluent in German could help.

That looks to me as if you are running a third party application to decode the TMC signals (of course, in the UK you would need a license to decode the location table), and then displaying them on the map as POIs.

This isn't quite the same as the builtin Traffic support, or the TMC support in the hardware devices, as there will be no option to auto-reroute around traffic.

Having said that, it's nice to see people still working on things like this.

This thread is mostly in English.

Your explanations are accurate.

Jose, Many thanks for fixing the link, it does make an interesting read - you must have spent hours getting this lot working, am I correct in saying it currently works in the following locations:

Spain & Andorra
Italy
Belgium
Germany
France
Netherlands

I notice the UK is missing, are there plans to add this or is it not possible to obtain the codes you need? - Mike

I could make a version of the software DecoRDS with TMC tables to England... but the TMC system in England is to pay: http://www.navigatiehosting.nl/TMC/tmczenderframelinks.htm
