NO_MAD,

It might also be worth asking users how best to position the new receiver - vertically, horizontally etc - in case this has a bearing on where to mount your unit

Just about the same as the width of a Mondeo windscreen.

Mine works best running horizontally along the bottom of the windscreen. I have tried it without success running up the screen near the A pillar and then along the top of the screen to the mirror.

yeah, this is a good thread.
i have just been sent my replacement RDS/MC unit (thanks TOM TOM)
with the shorter aerial and my mount, routing of the antenna in the tom tom suggested manner is impossible!,
so i guess it's just going to be a trial and error thing as far as placing is concerned?
keep us posted,
regards,
GaRy:)

Tim,

Your link here just seems to link to a link that links back here...or am I missing something?

The usual rule-of-thumb for whip aerials (ie. a bit of string) is 1/4 wavelength.

Assume 100MHz reception = 3metres wave length - gives you 75cms (~2ft). The main factor with any aerial is where you place it! Inside a car is a very bad place for an FM aerial - the car and occupants screen lots of the signal and the car electronics produce wide-band interference. I am including things like computers (ie sat navs), phones,PDAs... in this group.

yes the GTM21 (just to pick one I am familiar with) is a typically poor aerial. But get it connected to an outside aerial and things improve dramatically.
