The CTIA Fall Expo and conference was hosted this year in my favorite US city San Francisco. Situated in the centre of silicon valley it was not a surprise to see the top names in wireless technology showing their wares. There were 2 main focuses of the event: social networking and location based services...

In fact the emphasis on LBS was so strong that Navteq devoted the day before the conference to a series of seminars highlighting their efforts in the location arena.

Four of the five companies involved in the struggle to acquire and add value to the Navigation industry were present at the show (although Garmin was still to enter the frame at the time) and we had a chance to discuss the bids with all involved. This will be the subject of a second article.

One of our discussions at the show unearthed software used by the wireless operators that has a lot of potential privacy issues involved with it. One of the prices we pay for advancements in technology is the availability of a wealth of personal information and lifestyle data. Is this a good thing or is it something that needs to be closely examined and controlled?

Amazing stuff, but like you I have concerns that "control" is too easily presented as "security"

With all the data that is now being collected for GIS surely it must be possible to log each and every speed limit/delimit location in the land and thereby provide drivers with current and accurate information on the speed limit - I understand our local authority has mapped all (or most) grid and manhole locations!
