Hi All,
Just wondered if the software can detect traffic radar i.e ( bobby holding radar speed gun on motorway etc 8O )
or does it just detect fixed speed cameras.?
also what if there is a speed camera not in the pocketgps sc database, does checkpoint still detect the camera.? or doesnt see it cos its not been told its there etc.
I know we can add new cameras etc, but would like to know it will still detect even if its been missed from the database etc.

Hi Nick,
CheckPOInt is only a “GPS detector” plug-in for TomTom it can not detect radar or laser, i.e. give it a list of known places and it will warn you of them as you approach them. Now, the Pocket GPS World speed camera database which is free from this website is pretty accurate and works as well as my Morpheous Geodesy which is a standalone GPS Detector.
As the moment there’s a good database of fixed cameras (e.g. GATSOs) and Darren is developing a database of known locations where mobile systems operate for short periods of time.
If there’s a new camera that is not in the database then CheckPOInt will not warn you. Also, if the camera has been removed, but the database has not been updated then CheckPOInt will still give you a warning. This is true for all GPS detectors, regardless of whether they are subscription based or not.
If you find a new camera location then I think you can add it to the database using checkpoint and then you can send in the amended database to this website so that new locations can be included in the next version. Alternatively I add new cameras to my own “New Camera” POI, which is much smaller than the full database and then send that small POI or just the longitude and latitude coordinates of the new cameras to Darren.

Hi Privateer,
Thanks for info,
So if checkpoint uses co ordinates for the cameras re known areas/cameras, why does it ask you to set a degree of view from the gps in the settings menu.? i.e 35 degrees, this itself makes it look like its going to look for them, surely if its purley reading from the checkpoint database for the cameras location, why mention a degree of view for them.? what is it for.? as they will show anyway once you hit the co ordinate etc
I can see the next big government project once everyone is settled will be to move all speed cameras back 20 meters, this will make checkpoint much more fun.
Does the database cover european speed cameras.? or just the uk.

Hi Nick,
That setting for “detection angle” is very useful. Imagine that you’re driving along a straight road. If a camera is on the same road as you then CheckPOInt will warn you. Please assume that all cameras are on the database for this example.
Now imagine that the road that you are on isn’t straight and that there are other roads close by that also have cameras. The detection angle setting allows CheckPOInt to ignore those cameras on other roads that you are approaching (in a straight line), because they are out of the angle of range. By the way, I use 25 as the angle of detection.
The database is mainly for the UK. If you look at the database page on this website then you’ll see a coverage map.
Use CheckPOInt 2.0.2, because the general view on this forum is that 2.0.2 is much better than the later versions.
