Hi,

Got my new TomTom XL yesterday with a separate ScanDisk 2Gb SD card. My problem is that when I copy my map content to the SD cartd and insert it ni my TOMTOM it restarts and a red cross coming up. I borrowed a TomTom SD card from a friend and tried, but the same problem occurs.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Isn't possible to by a non-TomTom SD card an use it? Since my friends TomTom card doesn't work either I think there might be something working with my TomTom Sad

You need to copy everything, including any hidden files, to the new SD card.

So if I make a backup of the content on my TomTom to my new SD card and then insert it, it will work?

It should do if you backup the full content. No promises, though, as my XL is an SD card 'virgin'. I have enough room on the Internal memory for my current needs.

How is it some SD (Secure Digital) cards can be copied and some can't?

I can back up the contents of my TransFlash card in my i3 to my PC but it won't work if copied to a new card......

I think that Garmin tied activation to the card as opposed to a specific device, so they'd put in some sort of card protection, like its serial number, looking specifically for an address marked as 'bad' or something (probably much more cunning) like that.

Keep trying.
It should work, but as with all things computer, it is often very hard to work out exactly what you did differently, when something suddenly works this time!
There are many discussions about this on the forums, and often the thing that people flag up as being the thing that sorted it for them, seems plain daft, but it worked! (or possibly, they did something else at the same time Wink ).

One recurrent theme you could try is doing a reformat of the card. For this, some say it *must* be FAT and others say it *must* be FAT 32, some say it must be done in the TomTom some say it must be done in a card reader (or even in a camera!).
Good luck!

You should also consider the read speed of the new card, if its not fast enough the device will reject the card and refuse to boot up, see the FAQ page listed in the sticky threads within this forum for more details on copying the card and the speed related issue - Mike

You will need to format the 2 GB SD card.

Then, you'll have to make sure there's the map, the application, and at least one voice on the SD card. TTH isn't known to successfully make and restore back-up's, so manual back-up's work better.

Do you mean SanDisk? All the ScanDisks that Google returns are mis-spellings of SanDisk. If SanDisk, what "model" of card? They have various, Ultra II, Extreme III, ..., which, I think, have different read/write speeds.

I've never had to format a SD card, "out of the packet". Is there something special about the format that the new models use?

NO.

I've never had to format any SD card I've used in a TomTom.

Also, if it is a Sandiskm SD card, is it one of the Ultra II versions?? You need a decent mopdern card reader to read them in the PC, and I don't know if the TomTom is acapable of reafing the UIltra II cards. Anyone?
