I know that I'm getting older and it may be a while since I read the Highway Code from cover to cover, but a council in Wales has introduced a new sign to prevent truck drivers (foreign drivers in particular) getting stuck under a low bridge.

What I can't comprehend, though, is that if these drivers don't understand "low bridge" or "height restriction" signs, how are they supposed to understand this:

Am I the only one who would struggle to know the meaning of this sign if I came across it in my own country, never mind a foreign country? As far as I can see, they might as well have just written the sign in welsh and left everybody confused

The full article can be found here:

This might have been covered elsewhere, but I couldn't see anything - apologies if I'm duplicating.

999Tommo, even better to have a sign with the various languages as found down the Benefits Office.
Quote:
Not suitable for heavy goods vehicles
Non approprié aux poids lourds
Nicht verwendbar für Schwerguttransporter
Non adatto a veicoli di merci pesanti
Nao apropriado para veículos de bens pesados
Не пригоден для грузовых автомобилей
No conveniente para los vehículos de mercancías pesadas
Lorries wouldn't be able to get past the sign in the first place. Very Happy

Surely a height restriction sign is universal, so that's why I was so puzzled about why these guys don't understand them.

Considering that most height signs appear to be metric these days (whether that's legal or not is another matter), so:

4.3m English
4,3m French
4,3m German
4,3m Polish

Alternatively a big round sign with a red line through a truck - meaning no trucks.

...but the blue sign introduced in Wales - does that mean

beware of low flying satellites

no trucks to the left

trucks may continue straight, but not turn left

no satellite reception to the left

aha - just one big sign at Dover pointing to the benefits office (DWP or whatever it's called today) and problem solved...all the trucks can be found in one place without having to worry about additional signs Wink Laughing

I wonder what will happen if a foreign driver doesn't have a Sat Nav and is using maps. If they get diverted off the M20 and look at the map, they would probably end up down the same country lanes. The new sign would ban only lorries WITH Sat Nav. Very Happy

Indeed! I see we already have all these signs, why on earth do we need a new one?

They should just put in a width restriction on the road to stop trucks going down there and be done with it....

What fun...

I think the sign means that lorries will be ZAPPED from outer space if they turn left.

The missus said it was "Lorries not allowed to fly kites on the left" Thumbs Up

Cheers
Paul

I was going to suggest the same, then I realised many of these village roads are bus routes serving the very villages the problems occur.

There should also be a £ on these signs to show that drivers will be charged for any damage - that will seriously eat into any profits made on a job and might make them think more carefully about obeying existing road signs
