Hi

I don't how it works, but I guess you classify respondants by the number of postings. I've just noticed some guy who's made 87 postings and is still a newbie!

Surely we should graduate to member or somethinga after say 20 Smile

And some people with over 100 entries are still classified as "Newbie". Wink

TBH I don't think it matters at all. This is a friendly forum and people always submit useful information.

Yeah, basically the way the ranking works is by the number of posts you have posted to the forum and these equate to the following categories...

1-199 Newbie
200-299 Beginner
300-399 Intermediate User
400+ Advanced User

There were only 3 categoreis so we added the Newbie because it seemed a large jump from 1-299 for what was a beginner. We can certainly add more ranks if people want.

Well, shiver me timbers privateer. I know it's friendly and I love it. I keep coming back and I've learned so much!

You've nearly earned your 'member' wings, I've got months (or even years) to go Crying or Very sad

Psionman,

I’ve still got a little way to go, to get my ‘member’ wings, but don’t forget that I joined the forum a year before you did and that was actually four to five months before I got a SatNav system. Wink

I reckon that you will soon overtake me in the posting stakes as you’ve already got your SatNav system and have experience of operating it, tweaking it, and fixing it after breaking it. Your already know a lot about your system and so you’re in a great position to offer advice to people who have just started to follow your lead and venture into the unknown and get their own SatNav system too. Thumbs Up

Regards,

Hi Psionman,

Privateer is right - don't despair, as I'm sure you will beat me to 'member' rank very soon! Wink

I don't own a PDA or GPS system, nor am I in a position to even think about investing in one at the moment - I just post a lot of POI files on the forum and try and help people with POI issues as and when I can.

By the time I make the 'member' rank, PDA systems will probably be obsolete and we will all be navigating with built-in GPS chips implanted in our brains!! Laughing Laughing Wink

I don't know where this leaves me - I'm about to break through 1000 posts!

I can't find any way of showing a member list on this forum software (unlike the old one) - but I have a feeling I could well be the only person with "Advanced User" status. The Pocket GPS team all have a special status.

I think there's plenty of people who have made very valuable contributions but are nowhere near 100 posts - and not that many that have made over 100 posts at all. I wonder if the first status change needs to come much sooner.

The current Top 10 posters are as follows:-

Dave..........3816
Darren........1162
DavidW........934
MikeB...........797
lbendlin.........676
Pc-Mobile......244
Oldie............192
Talkingbol.....164
Privateer.......159
Tim Buxton....158

This does bridge quite a gap, so I'll see if I can come up with a better indication of ranks so there's not a huge gap between them.

I took the plunge and bought my GPS for my Christmas present (to me!). I was very nervous about , but this site helped a lot with getting my mind clear about what I wanted. And the set up I have is ideal (for me)

Axim X5 and Holux with TT2. I have the Holux provided screen holder and a cable that is in my cigar lighter, but I have been able to hide quite easily. I get in, get a fix within a minute, and I'm off. (And how much do people pay for built in sat nav?)

As you might guess, I was a psion man. It took me a long time to get into the ppc world; I couldn't see the point! But now, when I look at the things I do on that one little machine:

GPS
Textmaker (Word Processing) (fold away key board)
Pocket Excel
Sprint DB (data bases)
Agenda Fusion (my favourite PIM)
emails and web browsing (Nokia 6310i via IrDA & Orange GPRS word wide!)
Calculator
Notepad
Alarm Clock
Ephemeris
Games
Music (MP3)
books anywhere anytime (I never read Treasure Island as a child!)
Games

I've almost stopped using my lap top - soon everyone will be wired (or wireless!) this way!

Thanks for that.

Of the top five, I'm the only one that isn't Pocket GPS Team.

Of the next five, Pc-Mobile has specialist knowledge about cables and the like - and he's only got "Beginner" status, it seems.

The next four all still have Newbie status! Oldie writes a lot of the POI software. Talkingbol... doesn't do what his nick implies, and both he and Privateer give a lot of good advice, from memory, primarily about TomTom. Tim Buxton is very knowledgeable about various things including Navman.

I don't think the current ranks are identifying those who have specialist knowledge or are known to regulars as those who give good advice.

I'm not sure what the rank limit is, but I've devised about a 20 rank system, which we will probably implement soon, this will give a better indication and smaller steps between ranks (e.g. 50 or 100 messages).

021-200 Member
201-400 Super Member
401-up Elite Member

Just a thought :D

You're right of course

But when you see an indiscretion (not that it happens much on this site) and it's a Newbie, you can forgive him/her more easily. When advice is given by a supermember you know that guy's been there, seen it and eaten the rabbit. It's only a small thing, but IMHO it would 'enhance the visitor experience' Confused
