I'm on backshift today, but before I leave, I will start a thread to see folks views.
For years and years now, vehicles have been made safer and safer, with all sorts of driver aids. These aids instead of preventing road deaths, cause drivers to drive faster, as they feel safe in their little cocoon.
I think instead of an airbag to cushion your pretty face in an accident, there should be a huge spike, sticking out the wheel at chest height. If you crash you get impaled on the spike. Perhaps this will encourage folk to drive safely ?
A bit extreme I know, but I'm open to ther suggestions. _________________ Tommo...

I think that vehicles have got worse since 4x4's, drivers seem to sit in these high vehicles as if they are "King of the Castle" with their favorite music blaring, they don't seem to have a clue of what's going on around them.
When car heaters didn't seem to work very well, (not that long ago, 1970's) it used to keep you awake, particularly in the Winter, maybe ban all heaters and aircon.
From the tales i've heard on airbags, that is one thing i hope never goes off, are they as safe as we are lead to believe?. _________________ TomTom Go 60

When we used to have snow in the winter, I gained a large amount of tips which i have remembered to get out of trouble, however these days the "new" drivers don't get this experience.
With most cars having ABS and/or traction control, the driver depends on the computer to get them out of trouble rather than their skills. _________________ TomTom Go 60

OK, so i know you have 4x4, but i was referring to the "Chelsea tractors" (no mud and no tow bar type) tinted window vehicle against the "used" version - as yours. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Well, you don't really know what I use it for, do you? It has no tow bar and I have been known to take it to Chelsea (well, Fulham really) when going to watch the Famous CFC. It does get muddy sometimes, though, in conjunction with my job. _________________ Tim

999Tommo has been reading my mind but missed some bits. Bald cross-ply tyres, drum brakes all round and sloppy steering. Put the same person in each car on a slippery test track, with various obstructions strategically placed, and observe which car they drive the slower in.

Even better would be to teach people how NOT to get in a skid in the first place.
In winter if the roads are wet and you can hear your tyres you should be OK adjusting your driving to wet conditions. However, should you not hear your tyres, you are on black ice. In the Autumn, when the leaves fall, it can be as slippery as when on ice or snow.
Whenever we get snow I always go to a quiet road, drive at 5mph and slam on the brakes. Do it again at 10, 15 and maybe 20mph. I get a good idea of how the car would react to an emergency situation.

A few years back my son was driving along the M25 near midnight, slippery conditions, when he swerved, too hard, to avoid a fox. He ended up in a nearside crash barrier still doing around 50mph, and if you had seen the front of his car, or lack of it, you would realise his airbag did it's job. He walked away with a cut lip,where the airbag had dislodged a cold sore. I suggested it would have been better to hit the fox but he said 'I didn't want to damage the car'.
4 x 4's. I have no problem with them, other than when trying to park between two in a car park and then can't open my door to get out. Maybe there should be a special area where the parking bays are a bit wider, especially for them.
