Rider Battery/power supply

After months of good service whilst mounted on the bike, I've got a problem with my TomTom Rider. On a long ride yesterday, the low battery symbol came on towards the end of the day, despite the unit being mounted on the carrier on the bike.

The unit shut down eventually, presumably because the battery was low. I checked supply connections from the bike battery and also checked the voltage at pins on the mount. 5 Volts available across the pins. I've also tried removing and replacing the unit on the mount several times, but it seems to be locating OK. It starts up wmen mounted, but shuts down after a minute or two, presumably because the internal battery is discharged.

So why isn't the unit running when fitted in the mount? I know the mount doesn't charge the internal battery, so what's going on?

Before anyone suggests charging the internal battery to get me home (I'm 500 miles away, on holiday), I didn't bring the mains charger with me!

Any suggestions, or is it back to TomTom?

It could be a faulty mount as this has been seen before, the pins errode the conact area resulting in a poor connection which in turn gives little electrical energy to charge the device, if this is the case you will need to contact TomTom, I had a chap at work only last month with the same problem with his rider - Mike

Check the pads on the unit that the four pins contact onto - if they are pitted then chances are the are making then breaking contact resulting in power being supplied then withdrawn - other symptom can be unit switching on and off as you are riding along

Short term two things to try - on the rubber mount where it clasps the unit at the front check how tight this is and if possibleapply some tape or similar to secure the unit tighter - ie a little pressure might help the pins and pads make contact.

Second as a last resort some silver paper placed individually onto the pas may build up the contact area enought to get you home - obviously would have to be done per pad to avoid shorting.

Took me months to get a replacement - with little or no contact with company - but hey you might get a new model unit - unfortunatly it has the same pin and pad arrangement!!

Well, I have done 2000 Miles with my new rider V2 and, it has just started to have a powe problem, I have e-mail tomtom, so we will see.
