What are you connecting it to the cig. lighter socket with? Are you using the Garmin adaptor that plugs into the back of the C510, using a large rectangular plug? ... or have you got a generic USB charger that you're plugging into the side of the C510?
If it's the former, then there's some kind of fault with the C510.
If it's the latter, then what you're seeing is expected behaviour - there *is* a way round it, but it would be a bit of a nuisance to do everytime... |

What is the way round? I have a generic charger that will plug into a mini USB when I don't want to use the traffic receiver but get the same problem. Interestingly plugging the Garmin mains charger into the same mini USB works normally. All 5V is not the same !! |

If you stick your right-thumb on the time for about 7 seconds, the C510 goes into its Diagnostics mode ...
If you connect the USB while in this mode, the C510 enters an undocumented "Garmin USB GPS" mode, as opposed to Mass-storage mode -- you can exit the diagnostics and it will continue to function as a GPS. However -- the reason this mode is undocumented, may be that about 0.5% of the time, it malfunctions. See this web-page, under the heading "What can go wrong", before proceeding!
Alternatively, I'll bet that with a resistor on the 'right' pins of the USB connector, you can fool it into switching to "Fleet Management Interface Mode", where it's used as a serial port. Maybe it would still charge in this mode? |

This is the official Garmin product - quite pricey
(The same adaptor is also used by the Nüvi 6xx series and Zümo). |

The 660 diagnostics do not contain the USB mode option. In any event the 660 does not seem to have screws to take the battery out for the ultimate rescue. I guess that I will just have to let the GTM21 aerial dangle when I don't want it. |
