I have a new TomTom XL Europe and have 3 questions I hope you can help with.

It appears to have an internal memory but there's also an SD card slot.
Does that mean I can fit an extra card in the slot and if so does that just take extras (like in my second question) or does all the existing data have to be transferred onto it.
If so, how?

The CD I got with the unit has 2 Europe "Satellite imagery" files on it, one called "basic". The basic one is installed on the unit.
What's the other one (4.8Mb) and what's the difference.
I don't have enough memory to install it (hence the first question!)

I'd like to use the traffic but I'm a complete novice on mobiles (except for using it to phone!) and I don't want to subscribe & then find I can't use it.
My Nokia 6310 on Virgin PAYGO appears to have GPRS (under services). From what I've tried to read up on in other forum topics that's what I need but most of it's over my head. Can someone take me through this in simple step by step words please.
Confused
Thanks

The One XL Europe does indeed use internal memory, the SD card slot is for future expansion such as USA maps. You cannot use the SD card and internal memory at the same time, if you insert a card the device will boot to the card. You need to copy the contents of the internal flash memory to the PC and then copy the files/ folders back to another SD card (see FAQ #1

Satellite images are used when you select browse map and zoom fully out to show all of the UK or Europe, I don't have the actual disk so its a little difficult to comment any further on what these files are.

For GPRS phone your network provider and ask them to enable the function on the handset, they can do this remotely. Next connect the phone to the XL using Bluetooth, before you trt paying for anything try using the Weather and/ or Buddies - if these work its proof the GPRS is working with your device and phone - your phone isn't listed as one that is known to work with TomTom (see Here ) but that doesn't mean it wont work - Mike

The bigger sat data files just show somewhat more detail.
They really aren't a lot of use when driving.

Thanks to both of you, it makes things much clearer. Thanks for the weather checking too, I'd never have thought of that

One final question, I see many different SD cards some said to be faster than others. Sometimes a "x16" is referred to (I suppose that's similar to CD / DVD drives) but not always. How do I decide on the right SD card?

Thanks

For memory cards the best advise is to stick with reputable manufacturers (Kingston/ SanDisk etc) but still go for the higher speed cards within their product range. Slower cards simply will not allow the device to boot up correctly, avoid e-bay and such like though as often claims of speed are not allways correct - it is easy to apply a label to a card claining it is faster than reality (Not all e-bay sales are dubious - but I wouldn't touch a memory card from there with a barge pole)

One card I know that works with the XL is This not the cheapest but I have one and have tried it in the XL with no problems.

If all you need to do is free up some space on the device to add POI, spoken alerts etc look into deleting some (or all) of the foreign voices - this can save quite a bit of memory, make sure you have a full back-up first though - Mike
