An interesting patent filed by TomTom last year has been discovered in the records of the European Patent Office.

The Patent gives details of a device that marries a live in-car video feed overlaid with navigation data so that you get a 3D map on top of an actual real world view! The Patent record goes on to discuss a solution that utilises "tilt sensors & pattern recognition to help with video display linking to map data... infra red for night use... camera zooms in/out depending on speed... multiple cameras..."

Now this could be quite good, esp with a heads up display. I can imagine that if TT don't do anything with it, we'll see if first on the next S class merc.

Only if they licence it from TomTom as it's their Patent now!

Wow!!! :D

Hmm. Wonder if they'll add a set of cross hairs and footage of missiles and an explosion so you can "kill" people who walk out in front of you without looking. Seems to be the general consensus round here that if you are on your mobile or listening to an mp3 player you are no longer a soft bag of squissy meat and bones but an invulnerable being from the planet Moron 6.

Seriously though, i wonder how much more distracting this would be for the driver if it isn't implemented into some sort of full screen interface. This might contain too much information for a small screen.

These type of Patent are often files simply to cover possible 'future use' of one or more components of the idea and protect against others using them.

Ah so it's not a "we might do this next year or the year after" type thing, more a "we thought of this, patented it so if anyone wants to do anything similar you have to pays us cos we thought of it first, but we might do it sometime or other...".

But a good insight of what may ahead in the not so distant future, TomTom will wish to stay well ahead of the rest..

Technology moves so fast that all/parts of this will probally show up quickly, as for HUD I can't wait.

From what is shown here, a HUD is not included, so it should be fairly easy to connect all the gps, mapping and camera bits together and then connect these to a HUD and say it is a new idea. All the pictures shown on this thread have the information displayed on a small screen only.

Cheers

Could probably still challenge it in court as the important part of the idea will have been copied.

Interestingly though, the insurance companies want to put cameras in our cars to record our mistakes. Add on to that a GPS for your location when you make that mistake, all you then need is a hud and bingo. Heads up GPS camera thingy.

I think that this ties in with their announcement that they have done a deal with Vodaphone to get this out on the street by the end of this year.

Just a few questions-
1. Why is the system connected to the cloud? Does it mean that some kind of divine intervention will be required for it to work? if so, this has already been patented by the church.
2. Will it use floppy disks rather than some more advanced forms of memory?
3. EEPROM?
4. Mouse?
5. Keyboard?
6. What is this box behind the driver's seat? Is this car going to Glasgow airport?

Perhaps to show they are still offering TomTom Weather Laughing Seriously though if you read the patent it is for I/O connection to an external network, strange symbol to use for a network though - Mike
