Come in here for your FREE duster

Well what next?

Suppose Darren and Bo Peep went to an ice-cream shop. Bo Peep ordered a strawberry flavoured ice-cream and Darren ordered a chocolate-flavoured ice-cream. They paid £5.70. Bo Peep’s elder brother, Robert, took a bite of each and he really liked the chocolate flavour. He went back to the shop to get two chocolate ice-cream’s for himself and a strawberry ice-cream for his friend. He paid £8.40. How much did the strawberry and chocolate ice-cream cost?

Solving this problem. Let "s" and "c" represent the cost of a strawberry and chocolate ice-cream, respectively.

In the first instance, for Bo Peep and Darren, we can extract the key words "1 strawberry"..."1 chocolate"..."cost £5.70" and translate this into a mathematical equation as s+c=5.70.

In the second instance, we can extract the key words "2 chocolate", "1 strawberry", "cost £8.40" and translate this into a mathematical equation as s+2c=8.40.

Observe that we have two equations and two unknowns ("s" and "c"). Our task is to find values of "s" and "c" (cost of strawberry and chocolate) which satisfy the conditions s+c=5.7 and s+2c=8.4 simultaneously.

s+c=5.7 ...[#1]
s+2c=8.4...[#2]

We can do this in various ways. Here, we can rearrange the first equation [#1] as s=5.7-c. Let's call this [#3].

Putting [#3] into the second equation [#2], we get (5.7-c)+2c=8.4. This process eliminates one of the unknown, leaving us with 5.7+c=8.4, which simplifies to c=8.4-5.7=2.7. i.e., cost of chocolate is £2.70. Now, putting this (now known value of "c") back into equation [#3], we get s=5.7-2.7=3. So, the cost of strawberry is £3.00.

How "Off Topic" can it get?

I'd go back to the shop and ask the person who sells them. :P

GJF, I'd take your medication ;) Aside from the waste of money that procuring 2,500 dusters entails I have no idea what relevance the maths lesson has to the problem!

Oh and Robert (Privateer) is BoPeep's partner not brother and he's a big guy!

There was a lot of debate as to Who was to start and As to what subject so i thought i would go madly "Off Topic" to break the ice and get this forum started - even if it was rubbish.

As a smoker I am all in favour of the ban, I like to think I am a considerate smoker, I never smoke in the company of non smokers, and I NEVER smoke in the swimming pool. Laughing

As an ex smoker, i hate all smokers and good riddance to them all.

Funny isn't it, I used to smoke upto forty a day, now i hate the smoke and feel like throwing a bucket of water over anyone with a "fag" - the smoking type of course.

But i ask myself, where is this taking us?

The Government want all smokers to stop, but they are "shooting themselves in the foot", less smokers means less taxes, less taxes means they are short on revenue, less revenue brings up the question - where else can i add more taxes?
Or is it a case that the extra money extracted from all those smoking "criminals" will bring in enough cash to fill the gap.

I'm not sure as to where we are going, we are being "milked" for cash from speed cameras and now anyone caught smoking will also have to pay a fine, fines, fines and more fines. Is this the new tax?

How long will it be, before you have to register into the Government computer when leaving your house and clocking back in when returning.
Do want to live in this new world?
I'm not sure if i do!

I'm going to look into the houses abroad web site.
