could the answer be to have an "Off topic Lounge" area on this site, where non-technical discussions, or topics which can't be categorised into one of the existing headings be added.

This is currently being discussed amongst the team.

I think this would be worth consideration - flag the subject of off topic discussions with OT and move them to another area of the forum so they don't detract from the otherwise high quality content here.

I understand that the idea of having a "Virtual Bar" here has been suggested many times but the site owners weren't in favour of this. It's too bad because there is a nice community feel to this place but there's only so much chat about GPS and cameras to be done...

I don't think any offence was intended either. Perhaps it was the wrong analogy, we are the sheep and Bo Peep is our shepherd keeping us on the straight and narrow! Wink

I agree totally with this comment, but even if we have the same hymn sheet we're all singing different words because one minute you have a member of the PGPSW team participating and the next somebody else is locking threads for relatively petty issues compared with some which are allowed to just roll on.

Under these circumstances it's difficult to know how to reply to a post or whether to reply at all.

I was not trying to single out any individual, but highlight something which could be a problem.

the playing field is not level
the hymn sheet may be the same, but we're all singing to different tunes

Stargate,

If you begin a post, then you are INVITING other members to join in the discussion by default.

You moan about drifting off topic, but your camera subject had been covered in another thread more than a month earlier, complete with photos of this new camera:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=53474

We can all type in BIG letters and BOLD, but it helps to be positive about things occasionally instead of constantly moaning.

I didn't name anybody individually, but this speaks for itself:
Stargate2006 wrote:
GPS-FAN,

keep your nose clean and stay on topic.

A fine example of the abusive posts which have been allowed to continue.

I didn't realise that joining a thread was by invitiation only, but this is not the first time Stargate has complained about other members' contributions to threads he/she started....but, he/she feels more than happy to join in and bitch in other peoples' threads.

It would appear that some members may not be on the same planet, let alone the same hymn sheet.

Oh well, you can't please everbody all of the time.

...and by the way, Stargate, Fri 15 to Wed 20 June is not a whole week on planet earth - so if you're going to moan in big bold letters, you could at least get your facts right Twisted Evil

Yes, sorry - no offence to anybody was intended

Perhaps I should have said that I'd like to hear it from the horse's mouth or something else, but didn't think of an alternative until it was to late. Crying or Very sad

Stop!

I wish you lot would stop SHOUTING, i'm getting a headache.

At this rate this thread here to discuss "being locked" will be locked and there will nowhere to discuss having an "Off Topic Lounge.

Maybe if an "Off Topic Lounge" is allowed by pgpsw, a few more rules can be added e.g.
1) Any personal abuse and member will be banned from the Off Topic Area,
2) Members can't add in their own rules such as "this is my thread" and you can't comment.

Edited: by request of Mostdom as the extra smilies blurred his "vision".

I wasn't shouting - just quoting others.

For the benefit of other members, the thread which Stargate is so upset about is this one:

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=56579

Anybody who cares to take a look will see that I was entirely to blame for this thread being locked because I was the only contributor...apart from the NINE other members who added posts, of course.

Thats quite alright, I won't hold it agaist you!

Since we're pointing fingers I would like to point out the blatent abuse of smilies on some peoples posts, which I find thoughly off putting. (you know whos you are's). A emoticon is to be used when to show the intent of your post (happy sad etc.) and not for decoration.

Humour is an emotion! :D

OK point the finger, Twisted Evil I was just trying to match your colourful cape "superman". Wink

At least i had added a bit of colour to the thread, not "colour by all the shouting. Rolling Eyes

PS.
Who said you could import all those "allien" smilies into the posts? Confused

There's a subtle difference between providing relevant information, pointing fingers and deflecting blame.

I've said throughout this thread that I didn't intend to name individuals and I wasn't pointing a finger at any particular member - although there were 9 other members in a particular thread who may have aided in the subject being de-railed, so why should I be singled out with the largest, boldest rudest post in THIS thread?

Sorry GPS_fan, my intentions are in jest, as I often am.

As to why you have been singled out by STARGATE is anyone's guess, which his case is all of the time!

Stagate: It is clear that English is not your first language, but you must try to choose your words more carefully. And by copying DennisN you have made you statment stand out as agressive.

Mods: I feel that a warning to members, as it is in most cases should be allowed to sink in, before being acted on. In some cases this could be over hours if the times between posts dictates.

Bo Peep: I have read through our last encounter which was meant to be humourous and in flow with the current flow of posts, and see that it may not have been recieved in the same way. Please see to accept my humblest of appologies in veiw of my oversite!

Poor "old" DennisN on holiday in Corfu, minding his own business, supping his Amstel and he gets the blame. 8O

Sad It must be raining there or he wouldn't be on his computer Sad - talk about kicking him when he is down. Rolling Eyes

Sorry "Off Topic" has gone "Off Topic" again.

Why can't i use a Off Topic smilie mostdom instead of keep writing "Off Topic"

Anymore personal attacks on any individual or off topic posts will be deleted, this applies to the entire forum by the way, if its not GPS related or contains personal attacks kiss the post goodbye, to be honest I thought long and hard about the last post made by Stargate earlier this morning and came very close to removing it, with hindsight perhaps I should have done. Acting as a "playground supervisor" is not something I enjoy during my lunchbreak - pack it in - Mike

I personally will read between the lines on this thread, and hope we all understand that we are forever minding our P&Q's on these forums. And although comments are often represented and read in a multitude of different ways, we must all learn to accasionally swallow our pride.

What is occasionally upsetting is that it is often the regular users of this site that get their wires crossed.
