How many more car tax dodgers are being caught? I've not heard of it and didn't think they would be tied in with enforcement??
On a recent visit to the big city, there were two vans with tax detection cameras and several cars, catching untaxed vehicles coming off the North side of the Woolwich Ferry before they entered the North Circular. I know this isn't in the congestion zone, but they had a surprising amount of "nicks".
Later that day on the return out of London on Commercial Road (past Aldgate) similar vehicles were "nicking" on the edge of the Congestion zone.
I may have written it badly, you are right in saying that there is no evidence that catching people with zone cameras is in force (I presume you mean static cameras), but i feel that access in and out of the zoned area is tighter and many more mobile camera vehicles are being used to catch tax dodgers.
I have also seen the same type of vehicles used along the Embankment, North side East to West. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Anyone have the latest stats from sources other than Ken Livingstone's office for the reduction in traffic in London since the charge?
Ken's quote on 15.05.07:
Quote:
Despite hostile media coverage predicting doom and gloom, it proved to be a success, with a 38 per cent reduction in private car use and carbon emissions down 20 per cent in the congestion charge zone. We invested heavily in our public transport system to offer Londoners a real alternative to their cars and the results speak for themselves - we now have over 80 per cent more people choosing to cycle and over six million people traveling by bus each day.
'I am now consulting on taking the congestion charge to its next logical step, so that it becomes a major tool in our drive to reduce carbon emissions, by offering 100 per cent discount for low emission cars and a charge of 25 pounds for the highest emitting vehicles. Such has been the success of the initial scheme, that our polling shows this measure would be supported by nearly 70 per cent of Londoners.'
Comparing the situation in New York with that in London, the Mayor noted that around five per cent of cars in London would be classed in the category of the most polluting vehicles, which would be charged 25 pounds. 50 per cent of cars in the United States would be in this category. These proposals will be subject to a full consultation and could be in place by 2010.
Putting Ken Livingstone's thoughts aside for a minute, don't forget journey pricing may encompass the whole country in the future.
OK, it might not happen in the next 10 years and, of course, a lot depends on the political will behind it (whatever you think of Ken and his politics, not all of our politicians have his will), but my gut felling is that it will happen eventually.
It took 75 years of policy discussion before the congestion charge was introduced by the way.
With that in mind, my gut feeling may just be plain wrong _________________ Robert Brady

It might of taken 75 years of policy discussion before the congestion charge was introduced, but I don't think we will be waiting even 10 years for journey pricing encompassing the whole country.
These day's the Government seems to have more tricks in altering Law's & policies than any Government in the past, black boxes in car's are already here, it won't be long before they are compulsory in all cars, then watch the "pay as you go" fees appear overnight (well less than ten years anyway). _________________ TomTom Go 60

...The governement should give all of us's a free blackbox with gps tracker...
No stargate, we don't want a free black box, because we just don't want a black box. If you want to track your car go and buy a tracker. _________________ Dom

They get around a bit. I've seen them on Tower Bridge a good number of times and also on Minories. Good luck to them I say, the more stolen/cloned/un taxed/un insured vehicles they get off the road the better. _________________ Gone fishing!

If Congeston Charging goes ahead, then I have a question to ask.
If I'm stuck in a traffic jam, do I get any of my money refunded!!???!?!?
Maybe a daft question, however are we guarranteed never to be involved in any congestion 'anywhere' if we pay per mile. I doubt it.
Why dont the people who want to travel at peak times contribute funds to the people who have stayed away to reduce the congestion.??
The incentive would then be that you will get payed to stay off the road, not charged less?
If a bad driver causes a pile-up on the motorway creating major delays and consequently congestion, will that person be responsible and therefore accountable for the cost to everyone tied up in the jam??
Another question is should the pence per mile rate include an insurance rate per mile, therefore if you travel during peak time it follows that your chance of being involved in an incident is increased. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 660

I very much doubt it - you're more likely to be charged more for spending longer on the road.
If the idea is to reduce traffic on major roads, then surely all that will happen is a large number of motorists will use the uncharged 'country lanes' instead and those quiet little villages will become rat runs _________________ Andy

I believe the government is seriously considering not only charging by the mile, but also the time of day, type of vehicle, engine, fuel consumption etc.. _________________ Robert Brady
