I heard a report on the radio today that all Gatso cameras that still use film are being converted to digital at a cost of about £10k each. Confused

Anyone else heard this?

No, I haven't heard this - but will it make much difference at the end of the day?

I would have thought that digital or film, you still get a fine and 3 points - although digital may just speed up the process of the envelope landing on your doormat

i think with film there is a higher chance of the film having 'run out' and no picture taken, but digital doesnt "run out"

There may also be an issue as to evidence a court will accept. Digital photo's are easy to tamper eg photoshop so some courts will not accept it.

I have have had 'photograhpic evidence' sent to me that 'may' have been tampered by making it darker making it difficult to count the teeth. Also there have been cases where number plates being blown up constitued 'tampering' as the number plate has to be clearly seen in full in the 'untampered photo'.

The digital images are "watermarked" so that they can't be tampered with.

Slightly OT, but, I do feel, that if this database is to remain the perceived No 1 in the UK, then all camera types should be easily identified in the download..even if that means larger files etc. Certainly, Truvelo's should be given a seperate listing at least. And if you don't do it, then I imagine that one of your competitors will. Innovation gentlemen...you can't afford to sit on your laurels just because you're No 1.....ask any business that's No 1...their biggest challenge is to stay in that position.

Since the camera types are clearly defined in the name of each camera, I'm presuming that you mean a download for each different fixed camera type, in the same way as we already have separate files for SPECS and Redlight? This wouldn't mean bigger files, in fact it would mean smaller files, but it would mean more individual files. This would probably cause problems for some SatNav systems, certainly TomTom v5 is limited to 39 POI files.

[Edit]
Re-reading your post and the above paragraph, I may have slightly misunderstood what you meant! The camera definition - and therefore its inclusion in the correct file, would be down to the submitter specifying the type correctly rather than just "there is a fixed camera at the following position".

Sorry, yes, I meant a down load for each camera...seperate files. I appreciate the TT limit, but I can then tweak what I want by camera type to suit...pretty easy really.

As it is to tweak the existing files to get exactly the set-up you want Thumbs Up
