I'm looking for a bike-mounted GPS system that I can use to record the coordinates of churches I photograph in the area of France where I live.

Can I easily tag a location's coordinates with an ID, ideally the town or church name, and failiing that a number I choose? Then can I upload the data to my PC and find the latitude and longitude of a church identified by its associated ID?

The manual I downloaded seems to suggest there is way to associate a description with a location, but I could no information on how to do it.

Any clarification or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You could have a look into Geo tagging the photos with the GPS position (some cameras do this) also some phones are capable of doing this (those with a built in GPS - The HTC Artemis works very well doing this), its a rubish camera but could be used to tag the photo, then take a proper picture with a proper camera, to view the images you can dispaly them in Google Earth or simply extract the Lat Long data out of the jpg image file - Mike

I'll look into it. Hadn't considered that option.

Since I get to the churches I photograph on my bike, my first thought had been a Garmin Edge 205 or 305, but I can't see out how to associate a particular lat/long reading with a particular church using the Edge. Is that doable or should I plan on finding some other way to make the association if I get an Edge?

Have a read of This thread which might give you a few ideas, one other product to consider is the Navman with the Nav-pix camera built in, there is a link to a review for this on the site home page - Mike

Thanks for the suggestions. However I quite like the camera I have (Canon ultra-compact)--very good optics) and will stay with it or a successor.

Have found a program that will match the tracks produced by a Garmin Geko to photos with the same date/time data in the EXIFs of jpg photos and put lat/long data in the EXIF. I understand the FR205/305 and Edge205/305 have better chipsets. Having read the manuals (which are so brief as to be cryptic), I can't work out whether one can upload a track file from the FR or EDGE GPSs.

Can anyone clarify this for me?

Thanks,
Harvey

I've been using the old Emap unit, but the ETrex or Geko should be fine. USB to serial interface connects the receiver, and the software does the rest.
