Gate or No Gate, we all look left and right before we cross the road. So the same applies to railway lines.

We have some gate crossings with no lights near me ( farm use only)

If people haven't the common sense to cross a railway line without getting injured or worse then all I can say is no loss for the UK.

And talking of idiots. Some years back they moved the foot crossing from Kemsley Station, as there had been a few near misses. On one occasion we left the station towards Sheerness when I looked out of the back window to see a female bumping her pushchair, complete with baby, and a toddler in tow, over the running rails. Luckily the gaps in the third rail were still there at that time.

Obviously the baby at fault. It was in the driving seat.

There are a few public foot crossings along the Strood - Paddock Wood line. When a train is due the gates lock and a warning bell sounds.

I worked on the scheme to upgrade that (Medway Valley) line. The only unmanned gates I recall are (1) just on the New Hythe side of Aylesford Station and (2) just on the East Farleigh side of Maidstone West Station and whilst there are warning bells, the gates certainly do not lock.

When i used to live in Strood, I can remember a foot crossing at Cuxton near the Medway Bridge, where there was at least one fatality and several injurys.

Again at Whitstable near Seasalter more deaths and injurys.

I have also seen people walking down the tracks between Kemsley and Sheerness, I think the kids get bored out there and use the tracks for fun.

Except that I didn't write that which was attributed to me; I merely expressed my sorrow for the baby.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it no longer exists. The only crossings I know of at Cuxton are the controlled one by the Station and the one to get to the boatyard, which is an occupation crossing.

I've heard that the woman is going to be charged with driving without due care and attention, in addition to being handed a bill for the damage she caused....

Who pays the bill, her or the Insurance Company?
We all pay in the long run.

This other link to the story doesn't say anything about her being a student.
Seems unlikely from the look of her.

typical Redditch fake-tan chav, probably blonde originally

I love the following coment in the article :-

'The crossing wasn't shown on the satnav, there were no signs at all and it wasn't lit up to warn of an oncoming train.'

Going by the picture linked to earlier, she'd either got defective eyesight ( in which case, why is she driving? ) or is an accomplished liar. If the latter I think her boyfriend should be worried! Smile

It does strike me that the Daily Mail took her statement at face value without making any effort to visit the crash site, get a picture of it or bother to listen to Railtrack's statement regarding the type of crossing.

I really don't know why people read papers like the Daily Mail, maybe it's because they don't want the facts to get in the way of a good story...
