Dave, the cost you will encounter depends on the tariff you are using, we can offer advice but this is too specific to a single user, unless you mention the actual call plan you are using.
I use T-Mobile and data traffic is unlimited, but I pay 7,50 PCM for the privilege of unlimited internet connection - so and GPRS traffic related data is lost in the noise, other users without the inclusive rates might find it considerably more costly - Mike

I got a problem with my One XL. Not sure if anyone can reproduce it. Basically I had it sitting on the kitchen counter, next to a screwdriver set. Next time I looked it was all in pieces!!! Very strange.

Does this mean they are going to transmit nationally on other stations? Is there any likely ETA for this?
I'm not quite sure how you made the jump from a TomTom unit having a TMC connector to a change in the broadcast policy of one of the 2 TMC service providers, but no, I'm not aware of any planned changes - as far as iTIS are concerned, they already have widespread coverage of the UK (not all, but widespread), and there are few (if any) radio stations left that could take the service and broadcast it (especially covering the areas of the country Classic FM does not reach).

What needs fixing is the TomTom TMC receiver so that it works better with the available service (which may, and I have no insider knowledge here, be as simple as providing a connector to allow the unit to be plugged into the car aerial feed)...

PS.

Can't wait to see the image of your colleague's in the South image of his TomTom. (A bra and a thong would be about right for Southend!!) Laughing

Am I right that only the UK regional version of the XL is available to buy at the moment, with the full European map version in a week or so's time?

I ask as I'm off to Portugal next week and wanted to upgrade my TomTom 300...so if any one has seen the Euro version please let me know.

I'll check Duty Free on the way through the airport!

PostPosted: Fri May 25, 2007 4:39 pm    Post subject: tomtom one xl vs. Garmin nuvi 350 Reply with quote

I have read all of the info on TomTom one xl, but have some questions.

1. Positives and Negatives of TomTom one xl and Nuvi 350?

2. Will they both give me the street name as a turn and not just turn right in 60 feet?

3. How do the traffic alerts differ? Which is better?

4. Which has a stronger signal?

5. Which would you buy if you were me?

I am moving to Atlanta and want to purchase a good gps that will help me to navigate around town and get in and out of traffic jams.

Thank you.

No, I did try the silent voice the other day out of interest after seeing your other threads on this topic - then again it could be my hearing Wink - but I doubt it to be honest - Mike

Generally speaking a nuvi is better than a tomtom go/one, but tomtom gives you an excellent "tactical" display, while garmin software is next to useless (same goes for the general usability of the GUI)

I have used the Nuvi 350, the One V2, and the One XL.

1. The Nuvi sometimes shows you driving off of the road. The TomTom is always on the road. The Nuvi POI is really out of date compaired to the new POI's included on the One V2. As for the XL, it has a much better screen, but all the same functionality of the One V2. I did not use the Bluetooth feature on the XL. The Nuvi, like the One V2 does not support hands-free calling.

2. Only the Nuvi has text-to-speech. Both the V2 and the XL only have left turn in..., etc.

3. I did not try the traffic alerts function. I live in a rural area without a traffic issue, so far.

4. Both TomTom units acquired a GPS lock much, much faster than the Nuvi. I was really impressed with this. The Nuvi seemed to take it's time and was prone to weak signal situations. If this is your only decision point, then TomTom wins hands down, period.

5. Since I have not made that decision for myself, I can't really provide you with the right choice. Following are my biggest complaints with all three units:

I tried the Nuvi first. Since I have a Garmin Streetpilot 2620 and have not found any fault with it, I was looking for a small unit for travel that would provide the same functionallity. I found the Nuvi to be unreliable in staying on the street. I sometimes found it displaying my postion several hundred feet off of the road that I was driving on. It also was prone to directing you to turn on a street that did not exist. I also didn't care for the rude sound of "RECALCULATING" when you didn't take the advised turn (talk about taking things too personally!!).

I then tried the One V2. I returned it because the touchscreen was very unreliable. The display model seemed to function just fine, but my unit was very difficult to use, often changing zoom and reversing movement when exploring the map.

I return it and selected the One XL. It performed as well as the V2 and the touchscreen worked flawlessly. The display was much bigger and much easier to read. I did have an issue with registering it with TomTom Home, since I had already set up the V2. You need to get TomTom Customer Support involved to transfer the unit on your Home account. This may be part of their security, but it is a major drawback for the user on the account. Other than this, everything was very favorful for the XL, but...but, the XL proved to be much too heavy for the windscreen mount. After you hit a few bumps, the XL is facing the dash. You have to constantly keep repositioning it to keep it in view. I looked at the mount, but there is no way of tighting it up. I think this is the same issue as the x10 sereies of devices. Keep in mind that the One V2 and the Nuvi were very stable in their mounts. Of course they are much smaller devices.

I really wanted to like the Nuvi, but after using it and reading some of the online posts, it has flaws, mainly in its' POI database. I would also think that Garmin would employee the "lock to road" feature, so you are not off driving in the field. I have not had this issue on my 2620.

As for TomTom, power on to GPS sync is really, really awesome. I did not find very many, if all, issues with the new POI database. This software was clearly more updated than Garmin. If you want text-to-speech direstions, then leave TomTom out. If you want reliable performance, TomTom seems to have the upper hand.

The only question is, should I buy a One V2 or should I wait for the Go 520/720? Sorry I couldn't help you beyond this point.
