Hi All. Just got this

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=115145&TabID=1&source=1&doy=18m4

from maplins for 93 but can't figure out how to include downloaded POIs. Tried OV2 files into the map but that didn't work. Any ideas?

Must confess I've been a little bemused that there's not more discussion.

That seems very good - and quick.

Seems fine - recalculating seems to happen pretty quick, and it doesn't bring up any progress bars, just kinda does it fairly quick, and offers some alternative to get you back on track, and when you've gone beyond that, pretty quickly comes up with a route change.

Not really had much chance to compare. The only TomTom I've got fleeting experience with is my wife's TT 510, which I've only briefly played with.

The remote is very handy on the aytobe.

Would like any info on loading POIs or speed camera databases, if anybody knows or has done it, though.

We could do with more info on what software or variant it is running. Is there any mention of custom POI support in the manual?

I downloaded the PDF and there wasn't any mention of Custom POI.

As they make great mention that you only need to plug the SD Card in and go, and there's no Activation required, etc. I assumed that what you get on the Card, is all you're going to get.

Any clues as to the software origin?

There is no mention of Soiftware or Map Data origins.

Maplin have these 2 Links for User Manuals.

Well the docs and splashscreen say "powered by smart2go", and uses Tele Atlas mapping.

I spoke with "support" this morning. No UK number so I phoned Holland. No, you cannot use custom POIs and this include speedcams.

They have not finished the programming for the Aytobe supplied speed camera plugin yet which makes me suspicious as the unit has been out for 6 months now coupled with the fact that they are very cheap leads me to believe it won't be supported much longer.

As for the unit it's self- quite good. Map colours are a bit faded especially in sunlight but the routing and recalculating are good- as good as my TomTom 6 (same map data).

But, I think mine will be going back- no custom POIs or speedcams is a no no for me.

Ah well that kinda confirms it for the moment. I guess if there was a reasonably easy way, it would be being boasted about.

A possibility. But there's also the TMC thing, as well - maybe that's a work in progress, too.

My thinking, too!

I found that - I'm wondering whether leaving it in night mode may make it more visible in sunlight.

That's what I was pleasantly suprised with, too. Calculates routes fairly quickly, seems to sort out deviations quite quickly, too.

I have thought about that.

But in thinking about how I've used my other sat nav (i3), and the types of things I navigate to, and the price (93) it's quite a good deal to give up.

Whilst I've always liked having speed camera warnings, and a certain safety net, if I'm honest, I don't rely on it. It's handy when driving somewhere I've never been.

I'm more interested in navigation and routing, being able to save locations, and being able to easily find places I want to navigate to. Plus it's got a pedestrian mode.

I've still got my i3 that I can use and keep updated with speedcams if I go somewhere I'm not familiar with. So I think I'll keep mine, and be ever hopeful that custom POI functionality and proximity warnings is something that gets developed.

Mine appears to be functional, I'm not sure if it actually works tho!

IIRC Smart2Go has been purchased by Nokia so that might suggest development on platforms other than their own may be curtailed or ended.
