OK, it's a bit of a lame reference, and not news either. But nevertheless everybody needs to be prepared for the time when GPS is not available/not functioning etc.
Read the whole thing here.

Thanks for the tip off Lutz, but at my age Quote: | Solar activity rises and falls in 11-year cycles with the next peak expected in 2011. | I may not be affected by the next one. _________________ Dennis

I can understand the solar bursts as the sun and space can offer far bigger complications to our living, than anything the world has to offer, but to have the Lockheed’s new F-22 Raptor fighter plane disabled by a few lines of computer code, after spending billions of dollars is certainly alarming. It just shows that human error can be just as dangerous (if not more so, in our immediate day to day world) than anything space can offer.
I thought that before they tested in the real world they did simulated tests on all the computer programmes. Thankfully it had a safe landing. _________________ TomTom Go 60

However, the U.S Naval Academy have now stopped teaching the use of a sextant. I also seem to recall reading, but can't now find a reference to check my memory, that the UK military have also stopped teaching their navigators how to use a sextant. _________________ Kam |

The way I do it is to stop the van and ask somebody (even though I'm male). _________________ Dennis

Nope, Compas & stars! Lets keep it simple.
Honestly, I only bought a GPS because it was a new toy to play with. Its good in many ways, but I don't rely on it.
As soon as we as a race of humans start relying on technology we'll be crashing our F22 raptors into the corner deli, left, right, and center.
Mine's still in the shop after I took out Milton keynes by mistake. :D _________________ Dom
