There seem to be a few systems around for the purposes of tracking a dog, but those that do generally meet my criteria are either very expensive to buy or very expensive to run (ie nearly a tenner per month subscription fee).

It makes me wonder if it would be cheaper to (somehow!) put together my own system, consisting of a GPS/mobile phone integrated unit and perhaps another such unit for displaying the location of the other phone (when suitably attached to the dog). The problem is getting the mobile phone on the dog to continuously transmit its location to my mobile phone AND display, in realtime, the location of the dog.

Main criteria are as follows:

GPS essential (I've ruled out radio equipment, it's too bulky and range and accuracy is limited)

Dog handler (me or the wife) need to be able to track the location of the dog in realtime with a suitable display on a mobile phone (presumably equipped with GPS, not sure on this if it would be needed on the handlers phone) - only needs to have a graphic to point in the direction of the dog, map isn't essential.

Don't want to have to go through a third party, ie none of the companies that charge you a monthly fee, although MAY consider one that charges a small amount per 'search', although I guess that data isn't going to be continuously updated inrealtime.

I had considered just sticking a small mobile phone in a suitable enclosure around the dogs neck and using one of those mobile phone tracking companies, but they don't seem to be accurate enough.

In these high-tech days my requirements don't sound too excessive - any recommendations please, either for a suitable service or a way of creating a suitable setup myself with off-the-shelf phones, etc?

Thanks

This is for off-lead work and those rare occasions when the dog decides it's damn well going to run off in search of that elusive but oh-so-tempting new smell ............

Have a read of This which I tried out a while back, you would need to attach batteries to the dog in order to power it - but a simple rechargable pack sohould be easy to do, there is a newer version out that provides images (maps) to show the location of the device and thus the position of the dog (in this case) - I am not too sure if this can display the position of the tracker unit on a phone though, I need to try the newer unit out to be sure - Mike
