1010 BIN = 10

9? PaulB2005, 9? Come on, I know you are better than that.

Start at the beginning and double the number, then add on the next digit, double this number again and add on the next digit etc.

So 2 x 1 = 2 + 0 = 2
2 x 2 = 4 + 1 = 5
2 x 5 = 10 + 0 = 10.

1001 BIN = 9

2 x 1 = 2 + 0 = 2
2 x 2 = 4 + 0 = 4
2 x 4 = 8 + 1 = 9

Much easier and quicker than the way taught. :D

There's an easier way of doing it the other way round too.

E.g. 365 to Binary.

Write the number to the right of the page. Halve the number and write down the result to the left of it. Ignore any fractions.

In this example halve of 365 = 182.5 ignore the .5 = 182.
Halve the 182 = 91.
Halve the 91 = 45.5. Ignore the .5 = 45 etc.

1, 2, 5, 11, 22, 45, 91, 182, 365

Start from the left and write a 1 for odd numbers and a 0 for even.

1 0 1 1 0 1 1 0 1

For the majority of the population there is no need to know anything about Binary.

Briefly, I guess you work in centimetres and metres ( maybe like me still use feet and inches), but computers work by switching on = 1 or off = 0. (Not strictly true as it would be something like .75v = 1 and .25v = 0, but let's call it on and off. So in the example for 10 there would be four switches.

1. 2. 3. 4. (1 = ON and 0 = OFF)
So the switches in the following positions would = the digital numbers.
0 0 0 0 = 0
0 0 0 1 = 1
0 0 1 0 = 2
0 0 1 1 = 3
0 1 0 0 = 4

1 0 0 1 = 9

1 0 1 0 = 10

1 1 1 1 = 15

Take for example a light switch, it's either down for on = 1 or up for off = 0.

A two way switch gives a few more pemutations e.g. If downstairs is down = 1 and upstairs is up = 0 you get light. If downstairs is up = 0 and upstairs is down = 1 you also get light, but if both up and down are up = 0 AND 0 or both are down 1 AND 1 there is no light.

Therefore 1 AND 0 = 1 ON or 0 AND 1 = 1 ON
(Or 1 AND NOT 1 = ON)

However 1 AND 1 = 0 OFF (Or 1 AND NOT 0 = OFF)
and
0 AND 0 = 0 OFF (Or 0 AND NOT 1 = OFF)

Odds = ON and Evens = OFF.

Computers have millions of 'switches', imagine the different combinations of 1's and 0's.

I think after that I'll have to go and have a lie down. Confused

There's only 1 type of people in MY world - He doesn't understand binary (although I'll admit I DID learn enough to eventually get the 10 people thing). It didn't exist when I got my GCE O level in Maths (and if it had done, I wouldn't have understood it - when my GCE result was promulgated, my maths mistress was furiously trying to find out how I'd cheated).

My upstairs light comes on when I click the thingy and sometimes it goes off when I click it. - doesn't matter which one of them either, whichever I'm nearest does whichever I want it to - if I'm upstairs and want to switch it off I can, but if I'm downstairs I can switch it off too. That's what light switches do.

My grandson several years ago accompanied me to the toilet and observed me carefully flush it. I asked him why the bubbles were white when the water was blue (thinking it would be an interesting point of discussion). He replied flatly "because that's the colour bubbles are, grandad." Light switches are just like that (a great improvement on the gas lights we had in our house when I were a lad in 't factory with threepence change).

You know? Spirit level tells you if something is level. Nothing like a qualification in an exam which is an O Level.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Lost_Property DID get the joke. I have another sneaking suspicion that his explanatory "clarification" of what constitutes binary was a response to the joke. It certainly didn't help me - when I need to work something out in binary I take a very very long time to get as far as 10 (assisted by an explanation about base 1 numbers being simpler than base 12 as in shillings and pence). Anyway, why do we call our money decimal when it's actually hundredmal? Question

Decimal is correct because it made up of digits between 0 and 9. If it was hundredmal it would be made up of digits between 0 and 99

ie.

Just make sure you show all files and extensions and that the file is called hundredmal.ov2, NOT hundredmal.ov2.ov2

On a North-Southbound course they can be applied as the camera distances if you factor in the stopping distance and prevailing wind speed. On a West-Eastbound course playing the list backwards into RealPlayer results in mp3 files which once converted to ogg will work but only on Garmin products and not TomTom because of copyright restrictions.

I'll leave out the obvious chicken joke..... Laughing

Can I bring the thread down by pointing out that the 1010 thing wouldn't actually work.

At risk of spoiling the humour in PaulB2005's sig by having to explain it to 'those who don't', as 1010 equals 10 ( decimal ) not 10 ( binary ) which equals 2 ( decimal ) there is a requirement for those who actually do 'get binary' to forget it briefly. Where's the fun in that Question

Otherwise, we could go 'there are 1111110010 types etc..' and then 'there are 11000101111010 types' and so on and so on and zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

I may never laugh at this quirky little joke again. Thanks. Sad

Well, for what it's worth, it took me a long time to get it and I still chuckle every time I see it (and feel green with envy that I couldn't in a zillion or 11111111000011100 years come up with anything that good). And no, I've no idea how many that is in decimal, hundredmal or old money.
