There has been no Press Release from Navman as yet as to when, or even if, SmartST2006 will be made available for older products. AS soon as we know and are allowed to tell you, you will know. Wink

Nice to see that we have a board full of Optimists!

Just hope that the sudden rush for everyone to have All-In-One units, doesn't mean that those with Pocket PCs get neglected. I know that the PPC option can mean trickier start-ups (as well as set-up), but the flexibility that I can decide to go with a completely different package, because the features they offer are better is a necessity for me. Let alone the other factor hat I can run other applications on it as well as sync'ing my calendar etc.

Fingers Crossed
Matt

I couldn't agree more on the flexibility of the PPC and my faithful iPaq 3970 (with scotch tape holding the SD card in and the protection case superglued together at the hinges) is always at hand. I'm reading (positively) between the lines of Tim's post although I'm not going to hold my breath just yet.

Hi All !!

Being in Australia, I glanced at the Navman Store (Australian) only yesterday and noticed that there is an upgrade to SmartST2006 n a redemption offer when buying new Navman Hardware at present. Looking deeper into the offer they mention the SmartST2006 will be available in September 06 (I have heard Navman's claims of release dates over the years, and usually hey spill out quite considerably, so I wouldn't hold my breathe), but at least t seems that we are heading towards SmartST2006 and this is an announcement from them.

Hope you all are anticipating this next release.

Regards
Denis Green

Don't get your hopes up, I read the upgrade and it seems to suggest that the maps are being upgraded and not the application itself.
I could be wrong (my wife tells meI usually am!), but that is how I would read it

Doing a little further delving into this matter, I find that the new ICN 750 supposedly is already using the new SmartST 2006 software/maps. It appears that the new software has the Nav-Pix ability, although this will obviously depend on the capability of the hardware to use this feature.

may perhaps whet your appetite into what perhaps we can expect.

The images on this site show Navman supplied pics as to what the graphics "should" look like, but once again, Navman being Navman anything could happen in the final release for their previous hardware software upgrades.

Regards,
Denis Green

Oops !!! I gfrgot to mention that the new SmartST 2006 software available on the ICN 720 and 750 also has the "Fuel", "Park" and "Home" options. The Fuel and Park options obviously direct you to the nearest Servo and Parking Station.

So it seems that the SmartST 2006 software will not just be a map upgrade, but will probably have extra features.

Oh and supposedly deals with the PostCode (7 digit) of UK

Regards
Denis

The Fuel and Park functions are linked to hardware buttons on both the 530 and 7xx series, therefore I wouldn't expect these features to be offered as part of a software upgrade for older models. 'Home' has been a software option since SmartST v1.0.

I'm guessing that Servo is Oz for Service. Smile

Any new features of SmartST2006 may not be backwards compatible with older models, and this is even assuming that Navman release 2006 as an upgrade. For instance, when the SmartST2005 upgrade for the iCN510 was released, it didn't support the 'night light' function provided on the 520.

Thanks for all the info guys - it all looks great. Basically I'm hoping I'll be able to get updated software and maps for my Pocket PC or use such upgrades as an excuse to get the latest Pocket PC :-) Having an independent box for GPS is not really of interest as I like to have everything possible on the PPC. Over the last few years, even when I've NOT been carrying the antenna I've still had the maps with me which has been most useful :-)

Tim, thanks for your comments re the software upgrade, but personally, I am only interested in the map updates. Any new features may be a bonus

I already am able to use the PiN 300 to find the nearest POIs if necessary by selecting the appropriate POI type and getting a list of the selected POI's in relative distance(s) from my current position. That's one good plus with the PiN (PPC) softwares that they have had a few advantages over the other series of units.

You were right in your assumption that Servo was Oz for Service Station, although it perhaps is more inclined to be used by my generation. These days where these Servo's are convenience stores, etc etc etc, I hear other terms creeping into the vocabulary.

Brian, what's this having to find excuses to upgrade. I would have thought that at our age, senility was the only excuse needed to further our ideas of what we need. My daughter in Europe is first to remind me of this, although she knows that I at least won't get lost when I venture into Europe.

Regards,
Denis
