What's the jury's opinion of which database is "better"?

POIplace seems to have cameras with the actual speed limits, which is a plus, but but is the quality/quantity of data for the speed cameras here considered to be better?

I haven't compared to the two - but the Pocket GPS World database could have speeds if people resubmitted existing cameras with speeds. If people don't bother, it won't happen.

I believe we have speeds for only around 10% of the cameras, which makes a speed based release really not worth the effort.

Richard does a lot of hand checking with the Pocket GPS World database - even now there's still a few roadside CCTV cameras and Trafficmaster installations that are in there.

I'm not sure what checking of people's submissions goes on with the POIplace databases.

The POIPlace speed limit information does make their data more useable (eg warnings only when you are going faster than the speed limit), and the ability to upload and sync new cameras before each trip (ie immediate updates) is quite good too.

However, the quality of the information in the PocketGPS database rivals their data in a lot of areas I travel making it difficult to favour one over the other - for example, I downloaded a load of speed cameras with speed limits of 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 the other day - none of which can be accurate speeds for UK speed cameras, and the other day I found a 40mph road with 2 cameras opposite one another, with one set to 40, and the other to 50. With the way CheckPOInt works, I had to drive past to delete the 50 camera, and then drive past a second time to create a new camera at 40 - at least with the PocketGPS database I can email the change and know it'll be sorted for the next update.

I've never compared quantity between the two, but I do normally find at most camera sites I have an icon for both databases.

What you describe indicates that POIplace are still simply adding submitted points.

People can easily press the wrong buttons, record an existing camera 200m away from its real location, or record the wrong speed limit. More points is not necessarily better - arguably the quality of the data is at least as important as the quantity if not more important (it's a bit like people comparing news servers on the number of groups - when the servers with the highest number of groups often have many moribund groups or groups that were never properly created in the first place).

The Pocket GPS World database undergoes a fair amount of sanity checking, at least when it comes to being changed and updated.

A further complication is that CheckPOInt 3 users can't easily submit points back to Pocket GPS World - you really need to downgrade to CheckPOInt 2.0.2 to do that. It would help if people would let Richard know (via the cameras email address) of speed limits for existing cameras.

Indeed

Yes, I've even done this myself (if you don't specify a speed limit quickly enough, the camera is added to a "?" category).

The website allows you to look at every POI you have submitted, including Lat/Long and the date and time you sent it to the server - I use this to send the details to the Cameras email address, so it can be done.

However, to show how accurate the POIPlace database is, I've removed 40% more cameras than I've added!

Maybe a good compromise would be to take the POIplace approach and just create extra categories (POI sets) for those cameras for which you *do* have a speed? At least that way visitors would imediately see the value of 'growing' the size of data set that has the speeds. Just a thought...
