Yesterday Nokia announced FREE Mapping software for a range of Handheld, Smartphone, and PDA devices. smart2go from Gate5 is available pre-installed on the new Nokia n95 and for download from the smart2go website.

Last year Nokia invested in the navigation sector by purchasing the Berlin based navigation software compamy Gate5. Although not one of the 'High Street' names the Gate5 smart2go software has been included in a lot of OEM PND systems.

The buy-out of Gate5 indicated that Nokia was taking a very serious attitude to navigation. As the Nokia devices are the World's most prolific handhelds it bodes well for navigation in general.

Also with one of the main manufacturers of handsets entering a market sector where data costs can be an issue it remains to be seen if the network providers start to come up with some well thought out unlimited roaming packages for data.

The announcement made by Nokia yesterday allows users with compatible devices to download free software and mapping. Of course there is a slight catch, to get turn by turn navigation you need to buy a license...

I will be seeing Nokia/Gate5/smart2go tomorrow so I will try to get an update on the download situation.

Well it's now available to download it seems. Disappointing that the N series phones listed are N73, N80 and N93. Hope they port back to N70.

I can confirm the N80 works and the maps (south east France was the one I checked) was pretty accurate. First impressions. not bad, but very very slow. Makes TTM6 look a highly trained athlete, next to this asthmatic... Will download England and test properly on Thursday...

Cost looks fairly acceptable with 1 month, 1 year and 3 year (£67) licensing options for Western Europe. I like the idea of downloading a map for planning and then activiation turn by turn for a month while I go off to a country I do not own a map for..

Today was the first time the option of phone type to down load to opened.
All worked fine and the mapping seems very good compared to Garmin. But post code search for UK seems rather hit and miss.
I don't have BlueT GPS unit yet but the mapping looks V GOOD. Laughing

I have tried this on my Nokia E70, with a Qstarz BT-818 GPS unit. It works, but the navigation is a bit hit-and-miss.

On the good side, I like the licensing model (for UK/Ireland maps <£5 for a week, <£6 for a month, < £50 for a year and <£60 for 3 years). I like the navigation instructions (including things like "Continue on this road for 4 miles" after a junction when nothing else is going to happen for a while). Unfortunately, some of the instructions are a bit odd: sometimes it tells you to turn left when there's only a bend in the road and no junction. Other times it seems to miss out junctions altogether. Some of the graphics on the screen don't match too well with the real maps (especially confusing when you get a graphic telling you to turn left at a roundabout whose first exit was always straight on and has been replaced by a set of traffic lights anyway!)

It wants a connection when navigation starts, and also (on my Nokia at least) wants a single configured connection and won't prompt for how to connect (so if I want to use a WiFi connection when I can instead of GPRS, I have to change the config first). The user interface isn't bad, but it's not great either (especially if you haven't purchased the navigation licence). I'd like to see an easy way to temporarily switch voice directions off (or mute), for instance. (I use this a lot on my ancient TomTom PDA system.)

For the time-being, I'd rate it as useful when travelling abroad, but not a patch on TomTom for general use.

Julie

Well I tried it and yes its free and yes it sort of works but to be any good it needs to reach a certain functionality which it has yet to do. For instance you can't click on a road to see its number is but you can a street in a town. There is only a ABC keyboard which is irritating. You can't search for an entry in a list by entering letters so you have to scroll down the whole list etc etc. It may get good but at the moment it's not.

Take a look at http://research.nokia.com/research/projects/SportsTracker/
Nokia Sports Tracker is a GPS based activity tracker that runs on S60 smartphones. Information such as speed, distance and time are automatically stored to your training diary. To be able to use application for real, you need Nokia S60 3.0 phone with Bluetooth GPS device or Nokia S60 3.0 phone with integrated GPS.
Its great fun
