Ha sanyone purchased a GPS from the USA and if so what customs charges were made?

It depends on the company you purchase from. Anything over £22.50 that comes into the country should be charged 17.5% tax, and in most cases you will find the courier will add anything from £8 to £20 as a handling fee for paying the customs duty on your behalf. Average is usually £12.50 (Parcelforce/Fedex)

If goods do not have an invoice, and on the package they are marked ZERO COMMERCIAL VALUE rather than the price of the goods then they normally are not taxed and will sale through customs without charge. Most companies don't like doing this as it means there's no insurance replacement cost for the package lost in transit.

Some companies if they want business from the UK and do business regularly with UK customers will send it as a value under £22.50, but most don't.

Don't forget that there is also a customs duty (about 3.5% If recall correctly) and vat charged on the price and postage.
