I want to purchases my first system and have narrowed it down to the TT910 or Garmin 2820 as I need something which covers Europe and N. America and will hopefully be good for several years use.

The data storage capacity on the TT seems massive at 20GB, but can anyone tell me how the Garmin stores its maps/data? Is it possible to hold both Europe and US maps together in the Garmin, I’m a little unclear as who their system works in terms of uploading Maps etc.

The other functions seem similar on both models, but please point out any major differences in terms of function performance etc, am I right in thinking that both systems have dead-lock capabilities? any comments on mounting and build quality would also be welcome as I have read some negative comments re TT910 mounting.

And finally…the notion of the GTM 12 FM TMC traffic receiver appeals, can anyone confirm that if purchased in the UK the US subscription would not kick in until system was used in US?

Any finally finally….can the Garmin be used portably i.e. in the hand while on foot in a city or does it require a constant power supply…?

Many thanks to anyone who could help with any of the above, simon

The Garmin Streetpilot 2820 can be used both in a motorbike (waterproof) and in car. The 2820 comes with European Street Maps and Atlantic Base map.

In the 2820 the maps are pre loaded and is not hard disk based. You can upload Street level american maps at an additional cost. The GTM traffic modules which you buy in UK may not work in the US as they come only with UK subscription, if you get free traffic updates in the US then it might work. I think the GO 910 should cover most of your needs. Plus, with the new mount and firmware, it's only getting better.
