Thanks for that info, dendroica.
I have installed MaFt's POIs, a few POIs of my own, and the speed zoned camera database, using POILoader in Express mode, with no problems.
If I switch mine on without the card I get a picture of the i3 with a card and an arrow pointing to the slot, and "Please insert the TransFlash (microSD) Memory card", and pressing the buttons or wheel has no effect.
When I put the card in a card reader it has the Voices folder, gmapsupp.img, gmapsupp.unl, and a POI folder, which contains a 2,974 KB file poi.gpi. Opening the file in Notepad shows that it contains the Custom POIs.
So it looks as if the older units have the pre-installed POIs on the device and the maps and custom POIs on the card. I'm not brave enough to see what the unit does if I remove the card while it's switched on!
I'd still be interested to know what's on the card of the newer devices, after POIs have been loaded. _________________ Anita

Hi Anita. Further to your question, if I remove the card from the i3, it DOES NOT allow me to view map.
Cheers all. |

my i3 gives me general alerts of speed cameras and then further alerts (and icons) if travelling above the posted speed.
Does anyone know what I need to do to get the unit to only alert of speed cams if travelling too fast?
I loaded the speed zoned camera files onto my i3 (v3.0) using POI loader using the manual mode.
Anyone any ideas? Does everyone's i3 give a general speed cam warning? I got the impression from other posts that its only supposed to alert if going above the limit? |

Thanks, Paul. It looks as if the mapping is on the card then, so I don't understand why new users are having trouble installing POIs when those of us who've had i3s with the maps on the card for a while don't!
Maybe Garmin have made some changes. What firmware version is loaded on the devices bought from Comet recently?
Has anyone with an older unit tried installing the cameras while running the latest firmware? _________________ Anita

Mine gives a warning when approaching a camera whatever speed I'm doing, and further alerts if I exceed the limit, which is exactly how I want it. Some people say they only get an alert when exceeding the limit. _________________ Anita

Had mine 3 days (comet) and it came with v3.0 firmware. Before I got it I had been reading loadsa posts on here trying to get an understanding of sat navs (being my first one an all) especially the i3 and concluded that I would just download v.2.70 as soon as I got it. But I have had no probs so far with 3.0 so will continue with it and will only change if/when I encounter a glitch. _________________ Garmin StreetPilot i3 • v8 maps • firmware v3.0 • Audio v2.5 • Owner brightness~Dim • |

It seems as if units shipped with v3.0 firmware work fine, but users who have installed later versions on their older units are having problems.
There are so many possible variations between older and newer devices that I guess we'll just have to accept that POIs need to be handled differently.

Just as well for this excellent site then and for the fantastically helpful people on it like you Anita otherwise we'd be a hell of a lot more confused, thats for sure! So thank you.

Paul, I've had, and still get, so much helpful advice from members of these forums it's nice to be able to repay it by giving some help to others. :D
But it's a shame we can no longer assume that what works for our own i3 will work for others, resulting in all of us getting confused!

I'm sure that's not true! _________________ Anita
